EPISODE 85: Living in Paris for over 30 years as an expatriate New Yorker, veteran rocker and author Elliott Murphy’s career in music and literature is more active than ever. He has released over 35 albums, still performs shows all over Europe as well as the U.S. and Japan, is a prolific author of fiction (as well as his autobiography JUST A STORY FROM AMERICA) and most recently starring in the feature length film BROKEN POET. Nearly five decades have passed since the release of Elliott’s classic first album AQUASHOW (1973) and fans continue to fill his concerts while critics praise his albums. In 2016 a bio-pic of his career THE SECOND ACT OF ELLIOTT MURPHY featuring interviews with Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen was released all over Europe and won the Audience award at the Dock of the Bay Film Festival in Spain. Born on Long Island to a show business family, Elliott began his music career with a troubadour like odyssey in Europe in 1971 including a bit part in Federico Fellini’s film Roma. EPISODE 84: Raised in North Dakota’s cattle country, Neal Barnard grew up studying piano and cello. Barnard started composing and recording songs in the 80s. With a penchant for the avant-garde, Neal constantly writes songs that defy any genre categorization. He chooses unconventional time meters as well, in order to “tilt the song ever so slightly and give you that little jolt between the ears,” as he puts it. Barnard launched CarbonWorks at a 2016 event at New York’s Metrograph, hosted by Alec Baldwin and Maggie Q. Its line-up included singers from Italy, France, and the U.S., with rock and classical instrumentalists. While this is Barnard’s fourth album, following Pop Maru, Verdun, and CarbonWorks’ 2016 release, he is better known as a medical pioneer who formed the Physicians Committee in 1985 to rally for prevention, nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. In 2006, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Barnard used a low-fat vegan diet to revolutionize the treatment of type 2 diabetes and has used similar approaches to skewer weight problems, women’s health issues, and other medical challenges. “In music or medicine, we have to look out of the box,” he says. EPISODE 81: Sonja Kristina is a singer, actress and songwriter known has a member of the original cast of the musical "Hair" and as the lead singer for the progressive rock group, Curved Air. Kristina was born in Brentwood, England as Sonja Christina Shaw, daughter of a criminologist and granddaughter of Swedish actress Gerda Lundequist. Kristina first appeared on stage at the Swan Folk Club in Romford at the age of thirteen. Her first professional gig was at a Folk Festival in Southgate, London a year or so later. By 1968, while studying at the New College of Speech and Drama, Kristina was helping to run, and performing at, the Wednesday evening sessions at London's Troubadour Folk Club. She was generally known on the folk scene as "Sonja" having previously appeared several times on the British children's TV show Song and Story under that name. Her first manager was Roy Guest of Folk Directions. In 1968, Kristina auditioned for and won the part of "Crissy" in the London stage production of the stage musical Hair.
