  • S1 Ep202: "Is there a message in the mayhem?" Session 1. Teaching Tips.
    Why does suffering happen?

Where is God in suffering? How can we grow and develop as we go through times of trial?

In this session, we will explore what key passages from the Bible say about these and other related questions – starting with the creation account. We continue by considering the ministry of Jesus, and how the writings of the apostles and prophets give us hope now and for the future as they point to the ultimate hope.

This is the audio of the Zoom workshop conducted on Saturday, 30 May 2020. Simon Dinning and Chris Birtles made presentations on the topic of suffering. Following that discussion groups explored the topic further.

This recording provides my introduction, the two talks and conclusion as well as prayers by Sandra and Claudine.

Two further sessions will follow on Saturday 6th and 13th of June. If you  would like to register please go to my website where you will find all the details on the dedicated page.

Video of the session is available on my YouTube channel.

Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community.

  • S1 Ep199: "Psalms of Ascent Series", Quiet Time Coaching: Episode 199, Psalm 130v4
"Psalms of Ascent Series", Quiet Time Coaching: Episode 199, Psalm 130v4

You have found a daily podcast based on the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134).

They are designed to help our hearts and minds being a healthy place while the Covid 19 virus does its worst.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1–4 NIV11)

Each day we will meditate on a verse or two from these wonderful Psalms as we make our pilgrimage from confusion to hope, pain to peace, anxiety to joy.

This fear is not seen as being in any way negative by the Psalmist - or else he would not have written vv 5 & 6!  The Psalmist wants the LORD - not just his forgiveness.  He wants a right relationship with God, and that is his hope.  When we remember that the real point is to have a relationship with God, and that becomes our desire, then confessing our sins is no real problem.  Let’s remember 1 Jn 1:8-10.

  • S1 Ep48: "Is there STILL a message in the mayhem?" Newsletter 30 May 2020, Episode 48
Yes, there is STILL only one thing I want to talk about at the moment.

Tomorrow morning we are kicking off our three-part series called, "Is there a message in the mayhem?".  Chris Birtles and Simon Dinning are our first two speakers.

After their classes we will have somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes of discussion in breakout rooms.

Tomorrow's focus is, "Why do these things happen?" Why does suffering happen? Where is God in it? How can we grow and develop as we go through times of trial? In this session we will explore what key passages from the Bible say about these and other related questions – starting with the creation account. We continue by considering the ministry of Jesus, and how the writings of the apostles and prophets give us hope now and for the future as they point to the ultimate hope.

The handout is available on the dedicated page on my website.

The video of Chris's class can be found by clicking here.  And Simon's class can be found by clicking here.

If you haven't yet registered you can do so by looking at the page mentioned above, or by going straight to the Eventbrite meeting page.  As of the time of writing we are nudging up against 100 people who are planning to attend.

I do hope you can join us. If not, please do two things. Firstly, pass this information on to someone you think might be interested. Secondly, watch the videos at your own leisure and let me know any further questions or comments you have on the contents. That will help us as we plan the second and third sessions coming up next Saturday 6th June and the following Saturday, 13th June.

Finally, may I solicit your prayers for this event. We have never, as a group of friends, put on anything quite like this. We are very excited, if a little nervous!

    God bless, Malcolm

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

Because He stands there, we can ‘stand’ before God in confidence, and we can walk into God’s presence any time any day to find the grace we need, Heb 4:16. This truth and this love makes all the difference when we come to God and are conscious of our sin.  We need to bring our sin to him.  He will keep no record of sin that is surrendered to him.
