In November I said goodbye to one of the best mentors/teachers I ever had, my piano teacher Dick Patterson. After the funeral my brother Tim and I reflected on the impact he made in our lives, and how we are all called, in very different ways, to be mentors and teachers to those around us. I recently discovered the Church's vision for holy days of obligation through a good friend of mine. The CCC says "2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body." With that guidance from the Church, and some discussions on the subject with a couple priests, I am rethinking the way I approach holy days of obligation. Keith Nester is a former pastor/youth pastor with more than 20 years in full-time ministry. Keith served in United Methodist, Assemblies of God, and Evangelical Free churches in various roles. In 2017, after a 20 year long discernment process, Keith resigned his full-time ministry position and joined the Catholic Church. In October of 2018 Keith had to give up his career in ministry in order to follow the Lord into the Catholic faith. His story has many great takeaways for all of us.
