Sermon for Passion Sunday: On the Evil Effects of Bad HabitsOn Palm Sunday, St. Alphonsus de Liguori delivers a powerful warning about the evil effects of bad habits.

Jesus wished to enter Jerusalem, but first the ass had to be loosed. In the same way, the Lord cannot dwell in a soul that remains bound by the chains of bad habits. “Loose the bond from off thy neck, captive daughter of Sion!”

In this sermon, St. Alphonsus explains in three points the terrible consequences of allowing any sinful habit to take root:

First: A bad habit blinds the understanding — the soul no longer sees the evil of sin and walks toward ruin without realizing it.

Second: It hardens the heart — making the sinner insensitive to God’s calls, sermons, remorse, and even the thought of hell.

Third: It diminishes our strength — until the soul becomes so weak that it can no longer resist temptation and falls almost by necessity.

St. Alphonsus shows how small, repeated sins gradually become a heavy chain that leads to obstinacy and eternal loss. He urges every listener: Break the habit now, before the pit of sin closes over you and God’s light is completely withdrawn.

A sobering and urgent call to repentance and true conversion this Holy Week.

"The vines of the Lord are our souls, which he has given us to cultivate by good works, that we may be one day admitted into eternal glory. "How," says Salvian, "does it happen that a Christian believes, and still does not fear the future?" Christians believe death, judgment, hell, and Paradise: but they live as if they believed them not as if these truths of faith were tables or the inventions of human genius. Many live as it they were never to die, or as if they had not to give God an account of their life as if there were neither hell nor a heaven. Perhaps they do not believe in them? They believe, but do not reflect on them; and thus they are lost. They take all possible care of worldly affairs, but attend not to the salvation of their souls."
