  • When You Are Ready Grow Beyond Markets and Selling Direct - with Anneliese from Tikitibu

For makers and creatives, there's a huge shift that needs to be made when we start to commercialise our art and creations. It’s one thing to create an original, prepare things in small batches.

It’s another thing entirely to think about how you could take what you’ve invested, designed, made and turn it into something that could be mass produced and distributed beyond a market stall.

Anneliese Jozefek owns Tikitibu, a distribution company with a difference - she’s not just a distributor but a coach, strategist and advisor for small business owners who are makers. She’s got an initiate sense of what will or won’t work in the marketplace, knows what you might need to give up to get your products in stores and what you can gain in replacement.

If you’ve ever wondered what you need to know about going big, and scaling up your business as a maker, then this episode is for you.

Anneliese cares for her clients with a passion, wanting them to grow and succeed. Her advice is hard won, hard learned and intensely practical. Her advice is well worth a listen. She offers consulting on creative development, product development and manufacturing and is also open for submission for product distribution.

    In this episode we cover:

    • The TIKTITIBU story and how they are different from most distributors
    • What you need to be ready for when looking at business growth as a maker
    • How to look at your products in a new and more marketable way
    • The common barriers to growth as a maker
    • The benefits from productising your creations

  • Dealing With The Juggle of Running a Business While Parenting

While this podcast is offically all about marketing a small business, the truth is that one of the reasons so many of my clients struggle (and perhaps you too) is because there’s a whole heap of time and energy poverty caused by that juggle of parenting, and running a business

The tightest timesqueeze is most definitely in the first five years of your child’s life - and it cna make fitting all your business tasks in tricky, including your marketing.

Over ninety percent of my clients are mums, and many of them have children yet to start high school. So I wanted to share with you some of what I’ve learned in the 22 years of being a business owner and parent.

Before I was a marketer I worked in ECE and with parents of children under five, and was also a single parent for eight years from a starting point of three children aged 5, 3 and 8 months old. Through that time I was self employed and then ran businesses.

My children have only really ever known me as a small business owner. It’s both been awesome and really tough. For them and for me

I developed a bunch of “hacks” and coping strategies that made it easier to get the ‘best of both worlds” although I struggled to get the time for me and my own needs balanced into the mix.

In this episode I share a little of my story of what parenting is like now, what we’re headed into and what it was like raising three girls solo while running my business. I share some of the things I did to make it simpler and help us stay close as a team.

    In this episode we cover:

    • What parenting looks like now with one at home, in her last year at school
    • What it used to be like as a single mum of three, running a business
    • What the benefits of me running a business have been for our family
    • The moment I learned you need to ask for help
    • What you can do to get the “juggle” right
    • The one thing you need to do for you every day
    • How to make the juggle easier for you.

  • The LinkedIn Social Selling Method with Kate Nankivell

If Linkedin is on your list of platforms you need to do better on in 2023, then this episode will get you taking notes and even more importantly taking action on your marketing this year.

Linkedin has long been one of my favourite platforms, but one thing I do badly is sell on it. This is partly due to the fact I’ve had so many people over sell to me on messages and it’s made me feel pretty anti about buying signals when they do come in.

So asking Kate, social selling specialist and Linkedin expert, to help change my mind was a big step! And what I loved was her MONEY method (as in SHOW ME THE MONEY!) to help me, you and everyone else on Linkedin sell not only fitted well into my own values and beliefs around business and sales, but made it something we can all do.

Her ideas and processes are wise but also super simple.

Kate started off her career in “old school sales” and most of her work is with larger businesses and corporates, teaching teams how to use social selling to work best in a world where buyers have changed the way they buy.

Her advice fits both the large sales teams she now trains, along with us as small business owners, because like us, Kate uses the same tools to help  grow her own network and gain her ideal clients.

Linkedin is a wonderful place to grow your business and you’ll be that much wiser with this episode of MAP IT Marketing.

    In this episode we cover:

    • Why old school selling doesn’t work on Linkedin
    • What you need to know about social selling and why it works
    • How to use Kate’s “MONEY” method  - a five step linkeidn strategy
    • Why you need to think about what you post
    • What types of messages you can send other than a text based message
    • The key message to send after someone connects with you

  • Stuck In Your Marketing? Try One of These Ten Methods To Unstick Yourself

If you’re stuck in your marketing and you aren’t sure how to get unstuck then this episode is for you. We’re going to use ten different types of problem solving techniques, that you can use in any area of your life or business, to help unscramble the problem, work out “what’s really going on here” and find some options to move you from freeze or flee, and into taking action

Problem solving can help you shift your thinking, make you feel more confident in decision making, help you work out what help you need, and recognise both the current state and the gaps.

Before I was a marketer, before I was a content creator, before I was an ECE facilitator, and author… all of those things I was a primary teacher. We’re covering the ten tools I learnt when I was training to be a teacher,  many of which I have used through every career as needed to help me get myself out of a stuck  loop of thinking.

I can get anxious. I can get paralysed, and sometimes I want to quit before pushing through. I think most of us are like that.

I’ve learned to use these techniques to break out of it - even if I sometimes eye roll when someone suggests the one I really need, that I’m studiously avoiding.

Have a listen, try one or two out on a sticky situation of your own and make notes for the next time it’s just you, the problem and a big block between you and the solution.

    In this episode we cover:

    • Why we get stuck
    • How we can use problem solving to proactively pull ourselves out
    • What my favourite problem solving techniques are
    • The ten best problem solving techniques you can use
    • Real life examples of how these problem solving techniques can work in marketing, and in small business

  • Your About Us Page Needs Help and This Is Why

If you want to convert more people on your website, and you’ve looked over your SEO content, made it a user-friendly website to use, and have call to actions everywhere, there’s still a place you need to look at.

Your ABOUT US page. The content on this page can make someone trust you more, engage with you more and make them want to buy from you. It can also do the opposite of all of those things.

When I see a website that’s obviously not a huge corporation, the About Us page is one of the first pages I visit. And I’m not alone! We can see our visitors also feel the same way about our website.

Even if you are shy, and still wish the internet never made photos and info of us necessary, a good About Us page is one of the fastest, and simplest methods of trust building there is.

In this episode we’re going to cover some of the common mistakes people make when writing an about us page, what you should include, what not to include, whether you have to have photos of yourself, and of your team, and how an About Us page for a solopreneur can look different to one for a business with a team (we’ll cover both)

    We’ll also talk about boundaries.

There’s not many quick wins when it comes to marketing (no matter what people say, but getting that About Us page working would be right up there in that category. So tune in, take notes and write yourself a sizzling About Us that’s going to get more of those leads and sales coming in hot.

    In this episode we cover:

    • Why the About Us Page is so powerful
    • What you need to include
    • How a solopreneur’s about us is different from a teams’
    • What not to include in an About Us
    • What to do if you are camera shy
    • What sort of call to actions you can have on an About Us page.

  • How To Know It's Time To Shut Down Part or All of Your Business?

Last year I booked Claire Terry from the incredible and iconic Wellington retail business Madame Fancy Pants to come on the show about brand voice, social media and marketing

On the morning of the podcast recording, and the day after NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s shock resignation, Claire and I chatted on the phone. She had news, and wondered if perhaps I’d still want her to come on the show.

Claire had watched Jacinda Ardern’s speech and had wondered about the timing. She had completed a press release that was due to go out just after our podcast recording, which echoed much of what Jacinda Arden had said. There was nothing left in the tank. And that had to change.

Madame Fancy Pants is a firm favourite for thousands of Kiwis, both the instore and the online versions. And Claire announced on the 20th of January that she had made the very difficult decision to close her flagship store, in Cuba Street after having a shop in Wellington since 2006.

While she’s still running a store in Greytown and her online store, this was a huge decision and change for Claire, and her team

Claire was open to share with me,and you, her journey to this decision point, why it was a positive choice rather than a forced decision (and how important that is for us as small business owners) and what she’s hoping to discover and jump into once the store closes in February.

I’ve talked to a lot of small business owners who’ve come into 2023 tired. Some feel they need to make a change, to shut off a part of their business or step away completely.

A business will evolve and change over its lifetime. If you’re in a “waiting place”, finding business hard, or want to check in with what the warning signs are, this podcast is very much for you

And I want to say THANK YOU to Claire for her generosity in sharing this story. I hope you also love her honestly as much as I did.

    In this episode we cover:

    • How Madame Fancy Pants started
    • What impact the pandemic had on the business
    • Why Claire sees this as a conscious, positive move
    • What Claire regrets from the last few years
    • What she’s looking forward to most about having reduced stress
    • What her advice would be for small business owners in this place and stage

  • How the Cannabis Clinic Is Building Trust and Community Through Marketing Automation

What happens when you can’t use Facebook ads to grow your business? For an increasing number of businesses this has been the reality with random bans, or hacked accounts. It's a huge amount of stress and time to get it resolved.

So what if you never planned to use them anyway? Or what if you have a business that is not allowed to use them - because they are not allowed in Facebook’s TOS?

The Cannabis Clinic provides medicinal, prescription only pain and anxiety relief to thousands of Kiwis. But their product is not allowed to be advertised on Facebook.

Instead of sitting there and getting frustrated., founder and owner Dr Waseem Alzaher decided to grasp another alternative - marketing automation - to build community, to build connection and help attract patients needing his help.

We’re lucky enough to work with Wazeem, and help him every month with marketing automation using ActiveCampaign (we’re AC partners)

In this episode we walk through why he uses it, what he uses it for and how he’s planning to go deeper into its use in 2023.

So many people just scrape the surface of what’s possible with marketing automation. In this episode you’ll hear how you might be able to use it for your business.

Dr Waseem is sometimes called  the cannabis doctor. But in reality, making other people's lives better is his goal, both as an entrepreneur and a doctor. He started the Cannabis Clinic back in 2018 and has never looked back. He loves to challenge existing beliefs and solve problems. His clinic is leading the medicinal cannabis industry in NZ.

Running the Cannabis clinic also gives Waseem the ability to work remotely down in Palmerston North where he lives and be with his family.

    In this episode we cover:

    • How the Cannabis Clinic Started
    • Barriers The Cannabis Clinic faced in growing
    • What they actually do.
    • Why Waseem started using marketing automation
    • Why he works with agency help
    • What he’s hoping to use marketing automation for in the future

  • How ChatGPT Can Make Your Marketing Better (Or Worse)

I’ve spent the last few days creating content with chatGPT. Some of it is painfully awful. Some of it is very mundane. Occasionally I’ve created something that sparks interest.

The idea that AI can help us as small business owners in our marketing is HUGE. We spend so much time and energy on creating content and it’s exhausting, even if you enjoy it! If you have poor writing skills, or that creative bone in your body is a tiny jellied piece of nothing, then it’s a hard slog to get content down on a page, in a social media post, or an email.

The sheer time it takes to create content is a big investment. So it’s so easy to see why using a tool that is (presently) free, that can create content is seconds can be super tempting.

There are huge benefits to using AI for content creation. The time factor. The ability for something other than you to come up with ideas. The chance to tap into a machine that is learning with each new addition and piece of feedback.

I’ve found some ways to really embrace using AI in our business, and I’m sharing those more and more with my clients.

But there are things to worry about too. Google has said it can tell if the content is AI. I think I can often too. It’s not (yet) able to replace the power of our our minds to tell a story in a way that only we can. it’s limited in the ability to create powerful and personal metaphors or create your own style.

And there’s a concern that this already very very busy internet of words and noise will just become awash with more generic rubbish.

Of course, the best way to shine is to be "not rubbish".

In this podcast I’m going to share with you what chatGPT is, how I’ve tried to use it, and what I recommend and what to not do it with in your content marketing.

Embrace technology, give it a go and learn as you do (a little like chatGPT is!)

    In this episode we cover:

    • What chatGPT is
    • Why we should embrace AI
    • What AI is still not getting right
    • What you can use AI for in content marketing
    • How to maxmise its use
    • How to use it more creatively and effectively
    • Some of the concerns of copying and pasting AI material to use on your website

  • What Needs To Be The Key Marketing Plan For Your Business in 2023?

As I record this I’ve just come off the first of my interviews with my coaching clients, recording their goals for next year so I know what to best help them with. Even though we coach and learn as a group, each one of them has different needs - just like you do too.

So I’m going to help you work out your next steps for 2023, and help you figure out your marketing activity plan. Not what you’ll be doing, but how to work out how much, where and what you might need to learn to really get the results you want in 2023.

My biggest weakness as a coach is also my biggest strength. I don’t believer there is ONE BIG WAY of doing anything when it comes to marketing. As soon as another marketers says it’s their way or else, I’m out of there. Because even though I’m going to tell you that video is just getting more and more important, if you truly think it’s a hard no, you can get out of it.

Same goes with the platforms you choose, the amount of content you create, and what time and effort you commit to it. I’m not there in your office or home, living the life you have. We all have different budgets of time, money and energy.

So relax as you listen to this, make notes and then refine your own plan  - as we look at what you need to decide to make it perfect for you and your business in 2023.

    In this episode we cover:

    • Defining your goals
    • Working out your stretch space
    • Following the algorithm
    • Digging deep into video
    • Trends that aren’t going away
    • Sticking true to your values
    • Finding your rhythm of content creation
