The transfiguration of Christ is a unique story in the life of Jesus in that it gives Peter, James and John a sneak preview of the glory of Christ. What an incredible thing it would have been to see the glorified Christ having a conversation with Moses and Elijah! This lesson for Peter was meant to inspire fearful awe, illuminated hope, and joyful obedience; so it should for us as well.

Five words that are understood can be more edifying than ten thousand words spoken in another tongue. Paul's desire to see the Corinthians use their gifts to glorify God and edify one another is crystal clear as he questions the benefit of tongues when they cannot be understood. Ultimately, Paul wants to see the Word of God exalted rather than the gifts of men.

The roller-coaster of Peter's Christian life is no more evident anywhere in the Bible as it is here in Matthew 16. Peter confesses Jesus as both the Messiah and the Son of the living God; soon after Peter adamantly rebukes Jesus for revealing that he must suffer, die and rise again. Paul speaks to this church who is unusually gifted and reminds them that their greatest pursuit must be that of love. Love is not seen as a feeling, but rather as actions that ought to be taken. When this is done, the gifts that God has given to the church will be effectual for the purpose for which they were designed: to build the church. In light of eternity, our lives are short; we must use them to lovingly speak truth into the lives of one another.

Christianity, at its core, is about love. Christ loved so that He came to us; now we are to live lives marked by love. Love for Christ should drive us to devotion and obedience; love for others should drive us to compassion and evangelism. It was never about rules; rules are empty and rules will fail; Christianity must be centered upon love.

Jesus chose a group of twelve unlikely men and through a process of discipleship, transformed them into men of God who would change the world. This familiar story of Jesus (and later Peter) walking on water and meeting the disciples in the storm is filled with reminders of God's power and presence in our lives. Just as Jesus sent his disciples into a storm to teach them that his Person is greater than their circumstances, so he teaches us this lesson today.

Love is often spoken about as though it is merely a feeling; however, true love is seen, it is demonstrated, it is manifest. In this passage, Paul continues to share with the Corinthians that love is humble, it seeks another's good before its own.
