The Sermon of the Mount, recorded in Matthew 5-7, is Jesus' first public sermon and longest recorded in the gospels. Jesus' main focuses in these chapters is what we belong to (the Kingdom), who we belong to (the Father), and how we interact with both (love and obedience). It is the constitution of the "upside-down Kingdom". Here, losing is winning, suffering is joy, and enemies are loved. When people persecute us they get blessed. When there is division and strife, we stand as peacemakers. When we are struck with insults, we refuse to retaliate but instead manifest a crucified lamb. It is a kingdom where our time is not devoted to how much money we can make but how obedient we can be to the Father. It is where the meek inherit the earth not the strong and the politically savvy. In this kingdom, we give, pray and fast in secret and there is no need for anxiety concerning tomorrow. This is the only way of life for the Church and what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus.
Listen to a timely message from R. A. Martinez on the converging destinies of Israel, Islam, and the global Church.
We do not worship a memory, a memorial of what once was, or a teacher who has died. Christianity is not another dead religion. This morning and for all time we worship Him who is alive forevermore. We are here because we have all encountered a Person! With a billion saints gathered around the world today we declare, "We have seen him! We have seen his beauty!"
Through the cross, we have been joined to the Godhead forever in the Person of Jesus. Our hope is that through a massive divine initiative, God chose us, bought us, called us, raised us from the dead with Christ, justified us, and put His Spirit within us. He is working in us that which is pleasing in His sight to glorify us as surely as His Son's blood is of infinite value.
The crowd that shouted "hosanna" on Palm Sunday was the same crowd that would be shouting "crucify Him!" on Friday. What changed in 5 days?
Jesus did not fufill their expectations; He did what they did not expect and what they did not want Him to do.
Has unmet expectations caused you to miss the beauty of what Jesus is doing in you and with you?
Is God mostly sad, mostly mad or mostly glad? Listen as Chris Carter speaks to the MAPS family about the gentleness of God.
