The Jerusalem temple had been corrupted by the commerce of the Jewish religious system.  What was supposed to be a house of worship had turned into a marketplace.  Jesus is zealous for pure worship, worship that is focused on God, not on trade and greed.  When questioned about his authority by the Jews, his answer shows that he is the new temple, the one that would be destroyed and restored in three days.  They didn't understand, but John explains that the temple he is referring to is his body.

John records seven signs that authenticate that Jesus was the Messiah who had come with divine power.  This first sign at a wedding in Cana is the beginning of the "manifestation of his glory".  Here we see the bridegroom of heaven coming to the rescue of a bridegroom with limited resources.  The abundant good wine that Jesus creates from purification water symbolizes the abundant wine of blessing in the coming kingdom of God, and the blood that would purchase and purify his people forever.

Jesus gains his first followers.  We learn that Jesus knows them by name, he has the authority to give them a new name, and he reveals that he is more than just the Messiah, he is the new house of God, come to earth.
