This weekend the rainbow flag will fly high as Sydney celebrates its 48th Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The parade route along Oxford Street has been added to the National Heritage List; formally recognising its importance in the fight for queer rights.

But security will be tight around the city, amid fresh concerns about safety and inclusion.
