The Story Behind The Song

Paul McCloone was in for Mario on this week's Sunday Roast.

Today FM's Clara Kavanagh joined him for The Story Behind The Song.

In honour of International Women's Day, Clara told the story of Wannabe by the Spice Girls.

We heard how Wannabe got women talking about feminism and how Mel B wrote her spoken part of the song in a toilet in about 8 minutes!

Paul also admitted how he snubbed the song just before it became huge!

John Kelleher

John Kelleher is one of Ireland's leading independent film and television producers.

With his extensive experience he was appointed to the Irish Film Board in 1985 and as Official Film Censor in 2003.

Seen as a very liberal censor, he is known for significantly modernising what is now known as IFCO.

In 2004, he decided to allow Michael Winterbottom’s 9 Songs to play uncut in Irish cinemas. The film featured visible sexual intercourse.

John joined Paul McCloone on Mario's Sunday Roast to talk censorship, traditional media and US politics.

He also shared his love of Tommy Tiernan and spoke about his biggest heroes, his parents.

Genesis

Genesis play Dublin and Belfast this November as part of their first tour in 13 years.

The band, all now aged 69, are just one of many "heritage" bands making a comeback.

Aoife Martin

Back in 2017, Aoife made history when she became the first person globally to transition in her workplace.

Having been listed as one of Outstanding's Top 50 Future LGBT+ Leaders in 2018, she shares her story in a bid to change how others view transgender people.

Joining Alison Curtis on Mario's Sunday Roast, Aoife shared her inspiring story, along with her love of Casablanca and what makes her laugh.

The Story Behind The Song

Alison Curtis stood in for Mario this week.

Brian Brannigan of A Lazarus Soul joined her in studio for The Story Behind The Song. 

Brian chose Redemption Song by Bob Marley, a song that means a lot to him and he has often sang himself.

It is the final track on Bob Marley and the Wailers' twelfth album, Uprising, produced by Chris Blackwell.

The song urges listeners to "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery," because "None but ourselves can free our minds."

Marcus Garvey delivered these lines in a speech he gave in October 1937.

The song has been covered many times by the likes of Stone Roses lead singer Ian Brown and Joe Strummer, formerly of The Clash, and The Mescaleros.

The Fabulous Pharmacist

A case of Coronavirus, COVID-19, has been confirmed in Ireland, with the patient receiving treatment having traveled from an affected area in Northern Italy.

Although the health services are reassuring people not to panic, there is a lot of misinformation and hysteria happening online.

Hand sanitizer is short on stock and people are flocking to shops to buy face masks.

Laura Dowling, the Fabulous Pharmacist, joined Alison Curtis on Mario's Sunday Roast to give us the low down on all the myths and facts of the virus.

So Corona Virus or COVID-19 is in Ireland. One case confirmed as of 29/2/20. What DO we DO? Well, we don’t panic for a start. We wash our hands regularly, with soap (yes, OMG plain old cheap old soap will kill the virus!) and water . Get a good lather going, wash for 20 secs. Use hand sanitiser (above 60% alcohol) when we have NO access to soap and water. Cough and sneeze into your elbow or a disposable tissue. Which you then dispose of. In a bin. Don’t be one of those unattractive, germ-spreading individuals that cough/sneeze into mid air. If I see you I WILL have words with you! Avoid touching your face and mouth. This is how the virus is spread as well as inhalation of droplets and through the eyes. Do not travel to areas where there is a corona virus outbreak. Do not panic buy medicines- suppliers will not be able to keep up with demand if you do. Keep a level head.
