Mars on Life

Welcome to "The Falling Middle Cast," a podcast miniseries cohosted by Ryan and Sebastian as they talk about the professional middle class through the lens of Barbara Ehrenreich's seminal work "Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class." The two hope to understand more about why there's any kind of class disparity within the middle class itself and what the political movers and shakers are behind that disparity. In this episode, we go over the book's introduction.

To learn more about Ehrenreich and her body of work, check out "Know Our Enemy's" episode about her following her death last year.

Burning Man was chaos. What's the deal with lakes? And what really makes us want to read books? Other than that first part, it's as classic of a "Mars on Life" discussion as it gets.

Here is an online version of Christopher Hitchens' "Prisoner of Shelves" partially read at the end of the episode. Well worth a read.

What did we think about the Trump-less yet Trump-centric GOP debate? And what's the deal with that song about "rich men"? Time to talk about it. At around 40 minutes, one of us gets really riled about it. You love to see it.

How far will you go to see a movie? The guys talk about one intrepid film fan's mission to see "Oppenheimer" in New England. They also break down the heartbreaking tragedy that's taking place in Maui, with homes lost and accounts of tourists being tourists amidst the wreckage.

The guys lighten the discussion with some reflection on playing trivia, including one incident in 2015. Finally, Drew and Ryan talk a little about a genre of music not often discussed on MOL: disco.

To help out, here are a few reputable resources to help people out following the devastation in Maui.

Chaos is afoot as we watch corporate decisions create paradigm shifts on computer monitors and smartphones or on television and theater screens. Matt and Ryan attempt to comprehend what's happening, what's at risk of being lost and where we go from here.

Along with a gaggle of motorcycles next to Boston Common, Andrew, Ryan, Matt and, in little bites, Taylor Mewhiney review the sensation of the summer, the double feature of "Oppenheimer" (2023) and "Barbie" (2023). Apologies that our reviews reflect the runtime of both films.

Heat waves abound on both coasts while the Barbenheimer train chugs away! Ryan and Matt talk about the reactions to both movies, including conservative media's bizarre, boring response to "Barbie" and the gender and racial controversies with "Oppenheimer." One-third of us has seen the movie, tune in next week for our full reviews.

Heat waves across three continents are leaving people with little room for relief as the effects of climate change take their toll. Ryan regales to Matt about the premonitions of Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Ministry For the Future," and they discuss some of the very things contributing to our dying ecological world, including carbon-emitting pickup trucks and planes. As Ryan suggested last year, read the book.
