We often see Masonic Lodges advancing officers each year like they're playing a game of musical chairs and often without much regard to the leadership capabilities of the brethren.  

Many lodges (and masons) seem to think that putting Past Masters in any office, especially serving as Worshipful Master again, is a sign of an unhealthy lodge.  

This creates somewhat of a paradox where we have two mindsets that seem to contradict each other. On one hand we want to keep advancing everyone through the chairs but on the other hand, we become distraught when we have nobody but Past Masters to take an office.

If your Masonic lodge is having issues with membership retention then it may be worth considering how many lodges approached membership in the past.  

Freemasonry in the USA has been losing members for a few decades now and many jurisdictions have tried various approaches to help alleviate the problem. 

Some approaches include one-day classes, open houses, reducing the proficiencies, low dues, and even advertising yet the problem still remains.

  The more transparent and mundane we try to make ourselves appear the less attractive we are actually making our fraternity. This is because it is the things that separate us from other organizations, not the things we try to have in common, that make us appealing to many interested men.

Is Freemasonry still relevant in 2021?  

In a world where everything comes fast, easy, and cheap and quality has long been overshadowed by sheer quantity the answer is a resounding "yes".  In fact, authentic Freemasonry is more relevant now than ever.  

Join me as I discuss how Freemasonry offers something that can't be found anywhere else. I also talk about how what makes us the most unique is what makes us the most relevant, and how important it is that we re-evaluate our common practices which are taking us in the wrong direction.
