  • Mass Timber Construction Podcast Special Guest - Chris Skeels-Piggins - Hardwood Mass Timber Solutions

In this special guest episode I talk with CLTP Tasmania CEO Chris Skeels-Piggins about the launch of Cusp Building Solutions. Using CLTP's products, Cusp will operate essentially as the marketing branch of the organisation. To kick things off, they're highlighting their "world-first" hardwood Cross Laminated Timber for the structural timber market. Cusp hardwood CLT is made from Tasmanian Plantation Oak (Eucalyptus Nitens), sourced from certified sustainable plantations around the state. CLTP is tapping into a resource that hasn't previously been used for structural timber in this way. It's an evolution for the timber industry. Please enjoy my conversation with Chris as he outlines the challenges and triumphs of the journey he and his team have travelled in arriving a the world's first commercially available hardwood mass timber products.

  • Mass Timber Market Updates - Jun 2021 - Week Twentyfour

In this week's update, the covers have now come down to reveal the true beauty of the design and construct by Gardner Vaughan Group using the elegant combination of black and gold on the exterior. A recent report produced by the federal government, The State of the Mass Timber Industry in Canada (SMTC) in 2021, displays through an interactive map close to 500 under construction or completed mass timber projects from 2007 to 2019 for a total of 16 million square feet. The heavy timber pieces are being assembled in downtown Milwaukee for what is expected to become the world’s tallest building with a manufactured wood structure. SOS is a pioneer as the first public building in Chicago to fully utilise, and gained permit to use, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). As a renewable and reusable material, it can be recovered at the end of the building life and reused in other buildings. A $140 million apartment tower proposed in Milwaukee’s 3rd Ward advanced with a key design approval on Wednesday. Proposed by international developer Hines, the new building with 295 apartments would replace a parking lot with river frontage at Water Street and St. Paul Avenue. Have a great week!

  • Mass Timber Market Updates - May 2021 - Week Twentythree

In the weekly update, Construction startup Katerra has told employees it plans to shut down, people familiar with the matter said, marking the collapse of the SoftBank-backed company that had raised more than $2 billion to slash the cost of building apartments. Katerra is expected to let go of thousands of employees and is likely to walk away from dozens of construction projects it had agreed to build. Michael Green said, I was hopeful that Katerra could provide a path, though certainly not perfect, to changes that would reduce the cost of buildings, make buildings more environmentally responsible, improve the quality of construction and speed the process of building to the betterment of society. The world needs climate solutions that come from major disruption as well as smaller scale adjustments in how we live and how we build. The world also needs affordable, accessible, safe buildings for humankind. In other news, Hines begins construction of its Melbourne T3.
