Homag Group further expands its activities in the solid wood sector with the acquisition of a majority interest in the Danish mechanical engineering company Kallesoe Machinery A/S. Homag is acquiring a good 70% of the shares in Kallesoe Machinery A/S from the Christensen family, with the residual approximately 30% remaining with the Kallesoe family. The purchase price is in the low double-digit million-Euro range. A new image of how The Shakespeare North Playhouse will look when it opens in Prescot has been revealed. The project for the new Naples Centro Direzionale subway station by Benedetta Tagliabue - Miralles Tagliabue EMBT lies at the centre of a 1970s high-rise glass and steel complex designed by Kenzo Tange. Australia's tallest engineered timber office building in #Australia, 25 King has scooped up the UDIA National award for #Environmental Excellence. BC Housing is looking to mass timber as a potential way of cutting greenhouse gas emissions when building affordable housing.  Build back better” - that was the exhortation from the prime minister last summer and, while Boris Johnson’s choice of pet infrastructure projects can lead to elevated eyebrows at times.

Salla (Palos) Eckhardt is the Director of Transformation Services with Microsoft, serving as the chair of the US National BIM Program Steering Committee and has a wealth of knowledge about BIM and the digital integration into the construction process. SAWA will be Rotterdam’s first timber tower and is being touted as the Netherlands’ “healthiest building”.  April 22nd is Earth Day, an annual event that promotes environmental awareness throughout the world.  France’s wood sector has welcomed the government’s move to update a strategic contract for the industry to bring it in line with the country’s pandemic recovery plan and boost the sector’s contribution to a low-carbon transition. Hines continues to expand its portfolio of proprietary T3—timber, transit and technology—projects with the announcement of T3 FAT Village in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. And a new branch of Blumer Lehmann GmbH for timber construction | Engineering in Germany. Studio Puisto partners with nature tourism entrepreneur Kari Vainio with the realisation of its newly completed ‘uni villas’ resort.

In this episode, Element5, Ontario’s first and only Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) manufacturer, announces that their new factory in St. Thomas, Canada achieved certification. 123 East 6th Ave. in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, will be 10 storeys and 196,000 square feet. Construction is expected to begin in 2022 and be completed in 2024. Located at 123 East 6th Avenue, T3 Mount Pleasant will be a new mass-timber, transit-connected, technology and amenity-rich, mixed-use office building. Hᴏᴜꜱᴇ "Kʀᴏᴋᴏᴅɪʟ" - A "Crocodile" for Lokstadt. The mega-project “Krokodil” - a multi-storey building with 248 apartments. Standing handsomely on the east bank of the Des Moines River, 111 East Grand is a building of many firsts.  A team of students and researchers from Barcelona's Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia have designed and built a cabin for self-isolation, using wood harvested from within one kilometre of its site.  Finally, Big River Group announces the acquisition of speciality manufacturer, Timberwood Group. In news this week, 28 Walker Development is currently working on 40TEN, Baltimore’s first heavy timber office . Feds contribute $800,000 to new KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence using state-of-the-art floor and tall wall wood-based systems to accommodate the large spacing between columns. Red Stag officially open their factory. The factory will produce cross laminated timber. Swinerton, aka Timber Lab was awarded the $30-million Palm Springs Airport Ticketing Hall Renovation and Baggage Handling Upgrade project. BC's engineering teams provide joint guidelines to support the progression of mass timber construction in Canada. The District of Saanich is set to get a financial boost from the province in order to invest in mass timber projects. Chicago’s first modern mass timber commercial property is slated to span 270,000 square feet, has been dubbed T3 Goose Island. Hess timber are delivering largest timber beams to be transported to Australia are expected to arrive in Mount Gambier in July. Hasslacher Group invests in TC continuous kilns from Valutec. Kai Strehlke joined Lehmann Timber Code AG in 2015 where he began working on the interface between digital data and CNC manufacturing of large scale timber structures. In 2019 Kai presented a timber sculpture in the municipality of Urbach,  the 14-metre-high Urbach Tower whose timber panels took on their striking form themselves. Kai was also instrumental in working on the Swatch headquarters in Biel. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. With the aid of parametric planning and highly precise production, logistics and installation, the spectacular  Cambridge Mosque was delivered. The mosque also comprises a café, two apartments and gardens. The architectural concept was developed by London-based firm Marks Barfield Architects. 

In this episode, I talk to Kai about timber forms, glue types, the use of the natural torsion in the timber to allow the structure to take on a life of their own. Please enjoy my conversation with Kai.

Hoppy Easter to everybody, in this weekly update I wish you all a wonderful Easter break. In news around the world, Rotterdam-based architecture office Powerhouse Company has unveiled designs for a 12-story project will feature 11 stories built of cross-laminated timber without the use of adhesives to allow the building to be demounted and reassembled . SRG Partnership recently completed its own office in Portland, Oregon. A LEED Platinum project translates into an active design environment cultivating better work, stronger relationships, and fantastic energy. Vincent Callebaut Architectures has unveiled a bold vision to transform the heart of Lille, France into a carbon-neutral district capable of producing more energy than it uses. The project is called ‘Archiborescence’ — a combination of the words architecture and arborescence. A major expansion incorporating additional academic space and new student housing is planned for Douglas College immediately west of its main campus in downtown New Westminster. Leading Russian wood processing holding Segezha Group has launched the country's first factory to manufacture cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels in Sokol. In this weeks wrap-up, Prescot's stunning new Shakespeare theatre will have capacity for between 320 and 472 seats and is based on the iconic 17 th century ‘cockpit-in-court’ design. Moscow, Idaho, the University of Idaho, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains’ Bitterroot Range, all number of mass timber elements have been marshaled into the free-form structure Southwark station was designed by Sir Richard MacCormac as part of the Jubilee line extension. The new development comprises a commercial office building, including a mix of retail, food and beverage uses and workspace at the ground and first floor, and public realm improvements above Southwark Station.
