  • 022: Ask Me Anything (Part 1 of 2)

This episode of Sonitotum features my answers to questions asked by listeners — what the online folk call an “AMA” (Ask Me Anything). You know I tend to be long-winded, so of the six questions submitted, this episode covers three. Stay tuned for the other three in episode twenty three… you might want to subscribe so you don’t miss it!

    The Questions
    1. Rebecca Burns asked, “Have any of your story characters been influenced by real-life people (friends, enemies, colleagues, family, authors, politicians, actors, etc)–if so, who, how, and why? (and do they know or is it a secret homage?)”
    2. J. C. Hutchins asked, “What is your process for crafting believable, relatable characters in your fiction?”
    3. Rebecca also asked, “Who is your biggest cheerleader? Who encourages you to persevere as an artist?”
    4. Listen to the episode for my answers!

      • 021: The Squirrel Trappers Ruin Everything

This outdoor episode features an update on the Amazon advertising experiment I started about a month before, some news about progress on my upcoming novella set in the same storyworld as my novel Light of the Outsider, my secret plan to fight inflation tips on how to get away from Facebook when you can’t leave Facebook, and… yeah, there’s also some ranting about… some things.

When all was said and done, no squirrels were trapped or otherwise harmed during the recording of this episode… but… real talk, dear listener… I’m not in the best headspace in this one.

Despite that, or maybe because of that, there’s still plenty of value for your ears. I really do try to teach and share through the bitching and grousing.

        • Harold J. Johnson’s pioneering podcast was called Something That Happened. You can find several examples of his micro-episodes at OpenPodcast.org — all from the very same month and year I started podcasting myself. Harold, please come back to the mic.

        • Light of the Outsider, my latest novel.

        • J.C. Hutchins is an author you — as a listener of this show — probably already know. Whether you do or don’t, go forth and buy his stuff.
        • Facebook is probably not so good for you.

        • 020: In Dreams, I Walk… and Walk…

Another (parked) car-cast episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick! This time, I’ve got the lav mic going into my smartphone via the HD Audio Recorder app (which I suddenly can’t find in the Google Play store, making me wonder if it’s some kind of horrible malware and I didn’t know… ah well; works great!)

Anyway, there’s some wind noise and a little background randomness, but I think you’ll find the audio quality is much improved.

This episode, I share some dreams I’ve had lately, and what they might be trying to tell me about my mental health, especially with regard to my creative practice. It comes down to finding a metaphorical safe space to make things… perhaps.

You tell me! Provide your own feedback in  the comments section of this post, if you like!

        • 019: Service, Justice, and Creation

It’s a (parked) car-cast episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick! I continue to experiment with using my Audio-Technica lavaliere mic to allow me to do more spontaneous podcasting without worrying about finding the perfect time or perfect environment.

          This episode includes…

          • What I recognized about my sense of personal justice following two lousy (and one good) customer service experiences
          • Why a service-based approach is so important
          • My new mentoring / coaching service for writers, Your Story Buddy, including a listener-only discount offer on your first session
          • Voicemail feedback for Sonitotum 018 from Christopher Miller

            • Borders Books and Music
            • The type of padlock I was struggling to remember is a discus padlock. The “bar” that does the actual locking is called the “shank.”

            • 018: A Voice in the Desert

Hello! It’s a new episode of Sonitotum… and thanks to a simpler, more streamlined, and more portable approach to recording (which I talk about in the episode), there will be more to come in the weeks ahead. I miss talking to all y’all!

In this episode, I talk about…

              • What inspired my return to the mic
              • My next fiction project, what it’s going to take, and what it’s going to give
              • Solitude
              • My ongoing experiment with Amazon Sponsored Product advertising
              • And I ask you: What are you doing to engage with your creativity in this pandemic era? (You can respond in the comments section of this post, if you like!)

                • 017: Fifteen Years Podcasting

Yes, it’s been a while, but I couldn’t let October 15th go by without observing my fifteen-year anniversary as a podcaster with… a podcast!

This episode is part personal update… part retrospective on the early days of podcasting and, to a degree, indie publishing… part memoir… part rant… and mostly, an expression of gratitude and perspective and hope.

Since I cover fifteen years of creative history in this episode, there are a lot of links. Let’s get to ’em.

Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode
                  • The last time I released a podcast.
                  • The Autumn Project.
                  • Podcasts I produce: What Matters Most and The Possibility Podcast with Mel Schwartz.
                  • The current version of Windows when I started podcasting was Windows XP.
                  • My archived podcasts at the Internet Archive, including the very first episode: The MWS Media Radio Show Podcast / The DIY Endeavors Podcast.
                  • Harvey Danger, Peter Case, and Kristin Hersh were some of the “mainstream” artists who first released “podsafe” music.
                  • Jonathan Coulton probably has podcasting to thank for his initial success as a “geek” musician… now he’s a co-host on Ask Me Another, an NPR quiz show, among other things.
                  • Borders Books and Music.
                  • The Yahoo! Podcasters Group was the campfire around which we all first gathered. I wanted to give you a link, but it doesn’t seem to be around, or even archived, any more. Which is a shame, because that was where this history was written, thread by thread.
                  • That quote about sculpture I tried to remember was from Michelangelo.
                  • Brave Men Run. You’ve heard me say it before, probably, but yes, it was the first novel (and so probably the first book of any kind) with an initial simultaneous release in paperback, five e-book formats, and free podcast editions. You can still get the e-book or paperback.
                  • I talk about the collaborative spirit of podcasting, and how that intersected with independent publishing. My two biggest collaborative projects with author / podcasters were the fiction anthology The Sovereign Era: Year One and the record Anyman: The John Smith EP.
                  • I mentioned Writer’s Talking, my live call-in panel show. I need to track down those episodes, which were originally hosted by Talkshoe… which I was quite surprised to discover still exists (but my shows aren’t there).
                  • Five Minute Memoir is coming back, baby, but not without you.
                  • Here’s the video archive of I Know This Much. I’ll dig up the audio versions eventually…
                  • I was going to link to Jetset Studios and the Retroland pilot episode, but all I can find online anymore is the delightful animated series Jetset created, The Velvet Mouse Show. Check it out.
                  • I help other people make things. Maybe I can help you?
                  • Seth Godin taught the Internet everything we know about marketing. Any marketing guru online right now is aping stuff Seth Godin wrote about a quarter century ago. His blog and podcast are essential.
