  • 078: Sponges

In episode 078 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, the focus is on the balance between taking things in and acting on what you’ve absorbed.

When is it okay to not be writing / creating?

Why is that alleged downtime actually essential to the entire creative process?

This episode was recorded on April 3rd, 2023. It took three hours and thirty-five minutes to record, edit, produce and mix down the audio, create and upload the MP3 files, create, render, and upload the YouTube edition, write the show notes, and schedule the episode for release.

        • 077: Rhiannon Held

Episode 077 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick features an interview with author Rhiannon (R. Z.) Held.

Rhiannon Held is the author of the Silver series of urban fantasy novels published by Tor. As R. Z. Held, she writes the Amsterdam Institute series of space opera novellas. Her short fiction, also under R. Z. Held, appears in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Hybrid Fiction, and a number of other publications and anthologies.

Rhiannon lives near Seattle, where she works as an archaeologist for an environmental compliance firm. At work, she mostly uses her degree for copy-editing technical reports; in writing, she uses it for cultural world-building; in public, she’ll probably use it to check the mold seams on the wine bottle at dinner.

          Our conversation goes deep on…

          • cultural worldbuilding
          • deep time in fiction
          • touching people through our stories
          • balancing writing from the heart and following genre tropes
          • reaching new readers
          • the benefits of walking and “buffer zones” between our working and writing life…
          • …and a whole lot more. This one is chock full of good stuff.  Listen!

This episode was recorded on March 27th, 2023. The conversation with Rhiannon Held was recorded on January 22nd, 2023.

            • Rhiannon mentions LARPing. That stands for Live Action Role Playing. Here’s a little more about LARPs.
            • Rhiannon also mentioned play-by-email role playing games… a modern(ish) version of play-by-mail games that started in the 1970s.
            • Personal creative franchises (storyworlds) come up a lot on this show. In this episode, I mentioned Michael Moorcock‘s Eternal Champion, Stephen King’s loosely interconnected Prime Earth, and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Pellucidar.
            • Rhiannon mentions Chaco Culture and Mesa Verde.
            • I bring up Kevin J. Anderson’s walking / dictation routine.

A car-cast edition of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, episode 076 presents another possibly audacious proposal as a… means… to acquire the financial means to have the time and energy to engage in major creative projects in an all-out approach, rather than in bits and pieces as opportunity allows.

                Also: listener feedback!

This episode was recorded on March 20th, 2023.

                • Obsidian.md is a knowledge management application that works almost any way you want it. I’m investigating it as a possible platform to serve as my perfect / ideal software for creative writing — a subject I went deep on in this episode of Sonitotum.
                • Creator and developer Chrispian H. Burks offered excellent feedback and perspective on the feasibility of developing my dream writing software from whole cloth. He’s also been a friend and fan for pretty much ever, so cheers, pal!

                  • Brian — like not a few members of my reader community over the years — is keenly interested in an official audiobook for the canonical edition of my first novel, Brave Men Run — A Novel of the Sovereign Era. The only Sovereign Era audiobook available so far is for my short story “The World Revolves Around You.”
                  • One of the ongoing works in progress that might get a real speed boost from my proposal is Shadow of the Outsider, the next volume of my Shaper’s World cycle, which so far includes the novel Light of the Outsider and the novelette “The Perfumed Air at Kwaanantag Bay.”
                  • I mentioned the Scribtotum article in which I discuss the difference between systems and goals — and the benefits of the former over the latter.
                  • The last time I did anything like a crowdfunding campaign, I kept it simple, I kept it small, and I rolled my own. You can read all about it in this Scribtotum article.
                  • This episode features some listener feedback from Multiversalist member patron Amelia Bowen. Thanks, Amy!

                    • 075: In Conversation: Joyce Reynolds-Ward

Episode 075 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick features an interview with author Joyce Reynolds-Ward.

Joyce Reynolds-Ward (also find her on Twitter!) creates science fiction and fantasy works featuring themes of high-stakes family and political conflict, digital sentience, personal agency and control, realistic strong women, and (whenever possible) horses, frequently in Pacific Northwest settings.

Joyce is a Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off semifinalist, a Writers of the Future semifinalist, and an Anthology Builder finalist. She is the Secretary of the Northwest Independent Writers Association, a fellow member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, and a member of Soroptimists International.

Joyce writes in a variety of storyworlds, including The Netwalk Sequence, Goddess’s Honor, and The Martiniere books. She also has several stand-alone novels and other works out there in the world.

Our conversation covers why and what she writes, her definition of success and how close she is to accomplishing it, worldbuilding, character-driven storytelling, working around genre restrictions and expectations, the slow build of organic community building, managing ADHD with systems and structure, and a whole lot more.

This episode was recorded on March 15th, 2023. The conversation with Joyce Reynolds-Ward was recorded on January 18th, 2023.

                      • Then again, maybe I’ve found it… but it’s going to take some tinkering. Learn about Obsidian.
                      • You’ll have to listen to the episode to discover why I mention the song “Thunder Island” by Jay Ferguson.
                      • Ursula K. Le Guin comes up a lot on this podcast. This time around, Joyce and I talk about Always Coming Home and The Lathe of Heaven, two undeniable classics.
                      • Joyce mentions Hovenweep National Monument.

P.A. Cornell is a Chilean-Canadian writer who penned her first speculative-fiction story as a third-grade assignment (a science-fiction piece about shape-shifting aliens). An active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association and 2002 graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop, her stories have appeared in several professional anthologies and genre magazines, including Galaxy’s Edge, Cossmass Infinities, and Compelling Science Fiction, an  anthology from Flame Tree Press.

Her debut science fiction novella Lost Cargo was published in 2022 by Mocha Memoirs Press.

In this park cast episode 072 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, I wander around in the sunshine and suggest the specifications for what just might be the perfect software application of writers of all kinds. Listen to see if you agree, and by all means, add your wish list and suggestions in the comments!

This episode was recorded on February 20th, 2023.

Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode
                                  • This episode recorded at Central Park in Huntington Beach, California.
                                  • My day job? I’m a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you?
                                  • You can now name your own price (at least a buck; upper limit determined by your generosity and means) on all of my e-books when you purchase them directly from me. Check out what’s available.
                                  • Why’d I move to a “name your own price” model? Listen to Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick 070 for the details, or you can read this Scribtotum article.
                                  • No more need to visit that big online retailer to “Look Inside the Book” when it comes to my fiction and nonfiction! Visit any of the dedicated pages for my books and click the “Read a Sample” link for a taste… and then pay what you want for the e-book!
                                  • Since this is a park cast, I used my lavalier mic, which I recommend.
                                  • Hazy Days and Cloudy Nights: “How It All Got Started” is a free fiction serial provided free and exclusively to the members of my mailing list community. Get a new installment of eighties-flavored fiction delivered to your inbox every week when you subscribe for free!
                                  • Shadow of the Outsider is my current major work in progress. While we all wait, you can catch up with its predecessors, the novel Light of the Outsider and the novelette “The Perfumed Air at Kwaanantag Bay.”  And don’t forget — you can name your own price for the e-books!
                                  • Some of the writing software applications that come close, but aren’t quite right, include:
                                    • Scrivener
                                    • Plottr
                                    • yWriter
                                    • An outliner I use every days for a variety of tasks and highly recommend — but it’s still lacking as a software application for writers — is Dynalist.
                                    • Are personal knowledge management software applications as close as we get (for now) to the perfect software applications for writers? Examples include:
                                      • Obsidian
                                      • Notion
                                      • Logseq
                                      • OneNote
                                      • Tana
                                      • Why Josephine? It’s my little tribute to the memory of my grandmother on my stepfather’s side, Josephine Bridickas. Cheers, Gram Jos!
                                      • The SFWA author who recommended a little AI “daemon” on your shoulder as you write — like real time fact checking of your own work — is R. Jean Mathieu.
                                      • I mention Seafile, the open source, self-hosted replacement for Dropbox and / or Google Drive. It’s pretty neat.
                                      • Big thanks to my Multiversalists patron community, including Amelia Bowen, Ted Leonhardt, Chuck Anderson, and J. C. Hutchins!
