  • Inclusive Cities - Fiercely attractive cities require fiercely attractive budgets

Today we have a very special episode of the Mayor’s Manual Podcast. On the fourth floor of the Krasnapolsky Hotel, overlooking the Dam square, we are joined by Dr. Victor Santiago Pineda. Dr. Pineda is a globally recognized author, urbanist, speaker at House of Balance in Davos, presidential appointee and one of the driving forces behind Amsterdam for All and above all a very engaged person.

Inclusive cities do not only mean that designers should look at ramps in the city, because did you know that Uber in Amsterdam does not offer wheelchair accessible rides, whilst the city of Chicago does?

In this episode we also talk about financing innovation for the inclusive city. If we want to design radically inclusive and fiercely attractive cities, we also need radically inclusive and fiercely attractive budgets to pay for this. We discuss the opportunities that blockchain technologies offer to city budgets and how Mayor’s can help drive inclusive innovation forward.

  • Heat Stress - Equitable Solutions for Vulnerable Communities

Athens, Melbourne, Freetown and Los Angeles share the uncomfortable honor of being the first cities to appoint a Chief Heat Officer in the fight against Urban Heat Stress. This week we share a second conversation with a Chief Heat Officer about this silent urban killer in need of equitable solutions.

Our guest is Marta Segura, director of the Los Angeles Climate Emergency Mobilization Office and Chief Heat Officer. Marta takes us back to the beginning of her career as an environmental justice advocate which began around the time she finished graduate school and has its roots in childhood experiences of displacement and environmental assaults on her community. In this podcast she shares her experience on the use of climate vulnerability assessment and public buildings as resilience hubs and the importance of involving the community in designing equitable climate solutions.

  • Digital Human Rights - Moonshot for a Shared Digital World

This week tune in to the our second episode in the Digital Human Rights series, produced in partnership with Digital Rights House. Together with Jake Blok, co-founder of Digital Rights House, we talk with entrepreneurs, policymakers and researchers about digital human rights and gather advice to accelerate the adoption of digital human rights in the city.

We sat down for a longer conversation with Grace Simrall, Chief of Civic Innovation for the City of Louisville, and Ric Edinberg, a Chicago based designer specialized in Human Centered Design. We spoke about the difficulties of navigating the blurry line between digital and non-digital human rights and the benefit of applying consideration and intention where digital innovation seems to find forward momentum on its own accord. What do our guests think about the current state of digital rights and what advice for the future of the digital city comes from their experience?

His TikTok videos tell us all about one of the big cities of the United States, Chicago. In this conversation we talk about how art can inspire cities to grow and also realize that cities are made up of a sum of all the small stories within.

  • Global and Local Climate issues - Good Mayors Steal Ideas

We are delighted to welcome Mayor Todd Gloria of the city of San Diego and Carolien Gehrels, Arcadis’ Global director for the Energy Transition, in this weeks episode. We spoke to them about global and local climate challenges, how these issues can be addresses in an inclusive manner and that we have moved past the happy talk regarding these issues. Mayor’s and cities around the world should not spend any time reinventing the wheel, a good Mayor steals. Though San Diego and Amsterdam aren’t exactly neighbours, it is clear good and innovative ideas are ready to be translated and shared across oceans.

  • Urban Energy Systems - Acting on Challenges and Opportunities

This week we welcome Stephen Lorimer and Paul Voskuilen for a conversation about urban energy systems. Stephen works as manager for the Clean Energy Cities program at the Centre for Net Zero. He focuses on cities as accelerators of the energy transition through the building of future energy systems. Paul Voskuilen works as the programme developer Urban Energy at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. He is responsible for exploring, initiating and developing relevant energy projects in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, connecting science, business and practice.

With global uncertainty in the energy market as a backdrop and winter approaching, we discuss challenges and opportunities for the future of urban energy systems. The global uncertainty and price increase might act as an accelerator for the transition towards renewable energy. How can cities seize the opportunity rather than solely suffering the consequences of the risks involved. Urban infrastructure, urban consumers and business models might not yet be ready for an accelerated shift towards new energy systems. So what advice do Stephen and Paul offer Mayor’s globally?
