Prime Minister May has finally given us a few clues as to how Britain will take leave of the EU. In Ireland her commitment to preserve an open border between North and South will be welcome. But does that tally with other commitments she has made? London Editor Denis Staunton heard contradictions and hostages to fortune in May's speech - and some inflammatory and condescending language that won't help negotiations down the line.

In last Saturday's Irish Times Guy Hedgecoe interviewed Jason Coghlan, an English former criminal turned 'legal advisor' to English speakers dwelling in the south of Spain, some of whom are Irish, and some of whom are involved in organised crime. Why do career criminals flock to that region in such numbers? It's not just the weather, Guy tells us.
