Academics don’t feel free to air controversial opinions, according to a survey of academics by the Free Speech Union. Three of the taboo subjects were – not surprisingly - gender ideology, the Treaty of Waitangi and climate change. Academic freedom appears to ‘be on life support’ in our halls of learning. If you listened to the media and to the Disinformation Project, you would think that only right-wing people are violent & aggressive protesters. The problem is that violent left-wing activism has cropped up frequently in the U.S. in recent years, most notably during the summer of 2020, when activists destroyed the downtown areas of major cities during protests around the death of George Floyd. And there was the attempted murder by a pro-abortionist of a Supreme Court justice after the leaking of the draft of an opinion by the Supreme Court signalling that it is positioned to overturn Roe v. Wade. Even here in NZ, we saw violence from trans rights activists at the Posie Parker rally. A new study came out over the weekend, arguing that left-wing extremism and aggression are linked to psychopathic and narcissistic tendencies.

In a new 'pandemic of bonkers', some parents are wanting to raise their children as not baby boys or baby girls but as "theybies" - what is known as “gender creative parenting”. These parents are deliberately keeping the sex of their babies top secret because they say the children themselves should be free to decide – as they grow up - who they are. The good news is that while the media try and push the whole “theybies” thing, it’s not really catching on to most normal thinking parents. Concerns have been raised over the Invercargill City Council allowing anyone 'identifying' as female to use the female changing rooms at Invercargill’s Splash Palace public swimming pool. More than 100 people turned up at a meeting with council staff about the issue last week concerned about the policy. The American Library Association released a list of the 13 most “challenged” books aimed at teens during 2022, blaming ‘anti-LGBT’ prejudice for what it calls censorship. The problem is that all the books contain sexually explicit content and other offensive & objectionable material. It’s not ‘prejudice’ or ‘anti-LGBT’. It’s about protecting young people from explicit, age-inappropriate, offensive and potentially upsetting material.
