WaitingMalachi 4.2But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.
Imagine waiting for a whole year for something to happen. Or maybe 10 years. Or maybe 100 or 1000. Or more. The people of God were longing and waiting for a deliverer. There were those who wanted a warrior, those who wanted a ruler, those who wanted a supernatural figure. All made in their own image of what they wanted a Messiah to do and be. There are hundreds of inferences, both implicit and explicit throughout the Old Testament and here in the final book of the Old Testa- ment we hear of a sign that an indicator of the Messiah is that he will have healing in his wings. The Hebrew word for wings is Tallit. This is also the name of the prayer shawl worn by Jews at the time of Jesus and also Jews today.
In the gap between the Old and New Testament there is about 400 years. And in that time sur- rounding this verse there grew a tradition that the Messiah would be able to heal through his Tal- lit—a sign he was the real Messiah. To us, this probably sounds a lot like superstition.
And yet, to a woman with internal bleeding, in her desperation, longing for wholeness and recon- nection with everything she had lost, it was her final hope. She pushed through the crowds and reached out to touch the edge of Jesus’ cloak [Tallit] in the vain hope that she might be healed.
Who touched me? Jesus responded for he knew power went out from him. The disciples, bemused by Jesus’ question were rendered pretty much speechless. But there she was, on the ground now healed. [Matthew 9.20ff]
Stop and breathe
Father, help me to be patient in the waiting. Help me to trust you and know that you are my deliverer. Thankyou that I can reach out to you in the knowledge that you hear both the words of my mouth and the thoughts that remain silent.
