For the first time in this series, we bring on a guest who isn't Governor Siegelman himself. Tommy Gallion is a lifelong Republican, a senior Montgomery attorney, and one of the most connected political figures in Alabama history — with no track record of helping Siegelman, until now.

Gallion reveals, in his own words, that he was personally invited to a meeting where Karl Rove was expected to attend to discuss indicting Governor Siegelman during the middle of a political campaign. He said no. Weeks later, he picked up the newspaper and read that Siegelman had been indicted.

Gallion also goes back to 1994, describing a separate encounter where Rove pushed a different Republican candidate to go dirty on his opponent — and the smear campaign, run through University of Alabama law students, that followed in a different race that same year.

We put Rove's own sworn congressional testimony up against Gallion's account, ask him point blank why he believes Siegelman and Richard Scrushy were targeted, and close with new details about the meeting itself — including exactly where it was held.

Alabama Executed Jeffery Lee. His Own Jury Voted for Life. | Me and The Gov Episode 7

On September 17, 2026, Alabama executed Jeffery Lee — known to guards and fellow inmates as "J-Love" for the calm he brought to death row. His jury voted for life without parole. A judge, running for reelection, overrode that verdict and sentenced him to death anyway.

In this episode, Governor Don Siegelman and host Nick Collado go through exactly how that's still legal in one state in the country. Of the 155 people on Alabama's death row, 108 got there through non-unanimous jury verdicts and 25 through judicial override — a practice every other state in America has abandoned. Siegelman traces both practices back to an 1870 shift in the law, made only after formerly enslaved Black citizens gained the right to serve on juries and could no longer be counted on to vote for execution.

The numbers are stark: the Equal Justice Initiative found judicial override rates jump from 7% in non-election years to over 30% when judges are running for reelection. Of the 17 Black defendants sentenced to death by override in Alabama, every single one was sentenced by a judge running for reelection — and 16 of those judges were white.

Siegelman also reveals something personal: as Alabama's Attorney General, he was constitutionally required to set execution dates. Looking back, knowing what he knows now, he says he would have refused. He and former Republican Governor Robert Bentley once co-wrote a Washington Post op-ed calling for commutation of every sentence handed down through this exact process.

The conversation widens into the legal architecture that makes all of this possible — from a 1976 Supreme Court decision shielding prosecutors from civil liability even when they knowingly present false evidence, to a 2010 Obama-era Supreme Court argument that Americans have no constitutional right not to be framed, which Siegelman ties directly to the explosion of U.S. mass incarceration.

Karl Rove Said They Just Exchanged Christmas Cards. The Record Says Otherwise. | Me and The Gov Episode 6

This entire episode lives inside one exchange from Karl Rove's actual July 30, 2009 congressional interview. Governor Don Siegelman and host Nick Collado read the exchange almost word for word — because paraphrasing it undersells just how small Rove makes the relationship sound.

Asked about Bill Canary, the man at the center of the phone call that first connected Rove to Siegelman's prosecution, Rove's answer: a dozen calls over eight years, no specific memories, and "we did exchange Christmas cards." Asked about Canary's wife, Leura Canary — the U.S. Attorney who oversaw the case — Rove said he "literally couldn't tell you" if he'd ever spoken to her in person. Asked about Rob Riley, the son of Siegelman's 2002 opponent: "I have no idea."

Governor Siegelman pushes back on every answer, laying out a documented decades-long partnership between Rove and Canary dating back to 1992 — including a joint operation to remake the Alabama Supreme Court in the 1990s, a whisper campaign using University of Alabama law students, and a halted vote recount that later reporting has called a direct template for the 2000 Bush v. Gore fight in Florida.

Before any of that, they set the scene: the year-long fight just to get Rove in a room at all — subpoenaed twice, held in contempt, before finally striking a deal that let him skip the oath entirely. And who was actually sitting in that room, including a separate personal attorney for former President George W. Bush himself.

The episode also digs into David Margolis, the career Justice Department official who admitted to Congress "I was too passive" — the same official who fired a DOJ whistleblower and cleared the case of any conflict of interest, despite the prosecuting U.S. Attorney's own husband working to defeat Siegelman politically.

It closes with the actual George Stephanopoulos interview where Rove is confronted on camera and, in Stephanopoulos's own words, still refuses to give a direct denial.

Eight months after his release on appeal, Governor Don Siegelman watched Karl Rove spend two years fighting a congressional subpoena — until Rove finally cut a deal. Nancy Pelosi announced in March 2009 that Rove would testify "under penalty of perjury." Siegelman also revisits his history with Judge Mark Fuller, the man who presided over his original trial — a rivalry going back to a state congressional race, Fuller's opposition to Siegelman's lottery initiative, and a state audit that found Fuller had attempted to overpay a state employee by $300,000, resulting in newspapers calling him a thief before he ever took the federal bench. Siegelman connects this history to a no-bid federal aviation contract for Fuller's company — worth as much as $3 billion over a decade — awarded shortly after Siegelman's conviction.

How does a rising Democratic star with national ambitions end up in federal prison? In this episode, Governor Don Siegelman connects the dots — from a first indictment so weak the federal judge who dismissed it called it "the most unfounded criminal case" in his 29 years on the bench, to a second indictment built on the testimony of a government witness interviewed more than 70 times until his story finally matched what prosecutors needed.

Siegelman lays out, in detail: the check that a key witness swore existed — and that never did; a Department of Justice whistleblower's sworn account of that witness being pressured to "remember" something he didn't; sworn testimony from a Republican attorney about a meeting with Karl Rove to discuss timing an indictment around Siegelman's re-election campaign; and the U.S. Attorney overseeing his prosecution — whose own husband was running his opponent's campaign.

In 2002, Governor Don Siegelman won re-election. Every major network called it. He went to bed a winner — and by four the next morning, he was told they were trying to steal the election. Over 6,000 of his votes had vanished overnight.

In this episode, Siegelman plays his own concession speech from 17 days after the election and walks through, point by point, the evidence behind one of the most brazen instances of election manipulation in modern American history. The ballots and voting equipment were seized before a recount could happen and were never recovered. Karl Rove's own deputy was reportedly on the phone with a county probate judge the night the results changed. And an independent Auburn University study later found the vote count had actually been altered twice — the first pass added votes to his opponent's column but forgot to subtract them from Siegelman's, so the initial results still showed him winning, forcing a second manipulation that subtracted roughly 6,300 of his votes and, oddly, never touched a single down-ballot race.

Siegelman also details the money trail — an estimated $20 million in casino money funneled into Alabama to defeat both his campaign and a education lottery referendum that would have funded free early learning and college tuition for the state's children — and the strange, decades-later footnote that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. devoted a full chapter of his book Billionaires and Ballot Bandits to this exact story, years before later going on to serve in the Trump administration.
