From time to time, we have conversations with people who are experiencing financial success and/or finding meaning in their work, who feel somewhat guilty. Why? Because they are aware of how much stress and frustration other people around them are experiencing. Much of this stems from a high level of compassion, but there's also a piece where it can feel undeserving. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton shares why he doesn't think people should feel guilty for their progress. The biggest reason is how much work and dedication it took to reach that place. It's not a one-time decision, but rather years of discipline and thousands of good decisions along the way. If anything, these successes can be used as a living example for someone else, and can also provide even more opportunities to show generosity to others.

We all have influence. The who, where, what, when, and how all vary, as does the size of our influence, but we all have influence. We're also living in a time where we have the tools and platforms available to say anything we want about anything we want.....and are encouraged to do so. We've spent so much time asking the question "can we?", that we perhaps have failed to answer the question, "should we?" Some of us, in our pursuit to be right, have voluntarily given up our influence in the lives of people around us. We may say things or do things that we believe, but turn people away from us in doing so. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses the importance of maintaining influence in the areas we are called to influence, and how so many are sabotaging that influence over other topics in our culture.

We received a lot of feedback from episode 124 where we talked about the importance of not letting the selfishness of others steals our generous sprit. Today's episode is dedicated to one person's feedback. Our friend Jill shared how people will ask, "why would you do that?" whenever she talks about a major event she volunteers for or other acts of generosity. We've experienced similar questions whenever we discuss generosity with people in our lives. There seems to be a chasm between people who desire to be generous, and those who simple can't wrap their minds around the idea. "Why would you give away YOUR money?" "Why would you spend so much time if you aren't being paid?" What do you get out of it?" "What's the point?" The answer to those questions is simple. It's what we do. It's just what we do. Or maybe to take it a step further, it's who we are. It doesn't make sense.....until it makes all the sense in the world. One of our goals is for people to experience this drastic shift in their lives first-hand. It's amazing, and it's worth it. Jill, thank you for the feedback, thank you for serving the way you do, and thank you for the example you set for those around you. It's surely contagious.

The world tells us to do anything and everything to avoid failure. After all, failing = losing, right? We couldn't disagree more. Rather, we think failure is the entry price to growth and success. If we aren't willing to fail, or to take it a step further, actually pursue failure, we put an artificial cap on how far we can go. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why this concept is so important and shares some recent examples of he and Cole's recent pursuits. This episode is actually one such endeavor, as it's completely unedited and fully raw. It was scary to record, and the risk of failure was ever-present, which was the goal. What about you? What's one area of life your fear of failure has held you back from growth and possible success?

In past episodes, we've mentioned the idea of giving anonymously. On the surface, it sounds odd. However, in practice, it's one of the most powerful and life-giving things we can do with money. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains the various reasons why you might want to consider giving anonymously and provides some ideas on how to execute anonymous giving (it can be tricky!). This is a much-requested topic, and we're so glad to discuss it publicly in this forum. Enjoy!

There are many obvious benefits to budgeting, but today we're going to talk about a not-so-obvious benefit. Sometimes we fail. Sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes we do something we wish we could undo. One benefit of budgeting monthly is that somewhere between 1 and 30 days from now we'll get a clean slate. It's a beautiful part of this whole budgeting stuff, and one that can save us a lot of stress and heartbreak. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton shares some real-life examples of how this plays out in his family's life, as well as many of his clients'. If you've been on the fence about this whole budgeting business and think it will probably suck, maybe this is the episode that will push you to the other side. When we budget well, it makes our life better, it frees us of negative emotions such as guilt and regret, and it provides us the ability to quickly change as life changes around us.

Sometimes when we're generous, we'll get taken advantage of. Host Travis Shelton recently posted a $100 Starbucks gift card on our podcast Facebook group to bless some of our listeners. In addition to hopefully bringing a few smiles to people's faces, we expected two things to happen. The first: people would abuse the gift. Wow they didn't disappoint!!! In today's episode, we talk about how this all played out (you won't even believe it), why it can be so demoralizing when we get taken advantage of, and why it's so important we don't let the selfishness of others rob us of our generous spirit. We think this is such an important concept to embrace along our giving journey. It's inevitable we'll be hurt, taken advantage of, and our gifts abused......however, it shouldn't cloud the bigger picture or prevent us from growing in our generosity. If nothing else, it helps us get better, more impactful, more creative, and even more generous along the way.

Today's episode is short and simple. We're going to do a self-assessment to determine the top 10 things that add value to your life. It's an odd concept, and probably not something you've thought about much along the journey. Here's how it works. Spend some time thinking about what's really important to you. What are the 10 things that add the most value to your life. It can be anything. A product, an activity, a service, a possession.....be creative as you want. Once you inventory your top 10, determine if they line up with your financial and life decisions, or does there appear to be a gap between our values and our behavior? Also, if you're married, what does the overlap look like between you and your spouse? If you're willing to share, we'd love for you to hop on the Facebook group (link below) and tell us what you learned from this little exercise. From there, we'll produce part 2 of this series, where we believe we'll have some very interesting conclusions and takeaways.
