One of the most frequent questions we get asked is about host Travis Shelton's drastic decision to leave his career and take a 90% pay cut to do something different.  Why?  Why would someone do that?  Why would you take such a hit, especially with two toddlers and being the sole income of the family?  Well, the name Meaning Over Money isn't just a name.  It inherently represents who we are and how we live our lives.  In today's episode, Travis shares the real reason behind his decision.  But his decision and his reasoning is just that, his.  We each have our own story, our own journey, and our own path to walk.  So many people around us are walking their own meaning over money journeys.  Amazing stories are being written, seemingly-crazy decisions are being made, and people are being impacted.  It isn't unique to us, and we certainly don't have a monopoly on meaning, but we we do have a microphone.  So we're going to continue to lean into the idea of putting meaning over money.  We hope this episode a) helps you understand where we're coming from, b) gives you something to think about with your own life, and c) inspires you to say "yes" to a very scary/exciting decision you've been pondering for months (or years).

Whenever the topic of debt comes up, especially if we go down the road of talking about "good debt" and "bad debt", the conversation ultimately veers towards the direction of assessing interest rates.  We usually justify debt as "good" when it has a lower rate, and often classify it as "bad" when it has a higher rate.  In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he thinks we are overlooking the most important consideration.  We don't pay interest.....we pay payments.  There's a big difference.  Yeah, interest sucks.....but what sucks even more is the big check we need to write each month (even if it's not interest).  Each time we spend our money on those payments, we don't get to spend it on something more important or more enjoyable.

When we think about this money stuff, we often perceive those who are hurting or going through some serious financial issues as the most at-risk.  In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he thinks we have it backwards.  The people who are going through junk have a distinct inflection point to work through, whereas those who are ok most likely don't....and won't.  When things are going ok, we can often justify our passivity and instead choose to simply endure/tolerate what's in front of us.  This can lead to some serious consequences down the road.  If you're on the fence or living just OK, we hope today's episode will make you think and consider making some changes.  After all, you deserve better than OK.

Today's episode is a quick-hitter, and one that will surely anger some.  It seems like everyone is talking about passive income income these days.  Frankly, we don't believe there's such a thing as "passive" income.  Either it's not nearly as passive as one would let on, or if it does have an element of passivity to it, the work it takes to create it is as far from passive as imaginable.  In other words, if someone is trying to sell you on the idea of "passive income", it's either because a) it's a scam, b) they are a liar, or c) they are naive to the work it takes to make it actually work.  Your feedback and passive income schemes are welcome!

From time to time, we talk about the importance of having an emergency fund.  You know, the thing that protects us when life throws a major curveball our way.  It's when, not if.  Without an emergency fund, these curveballs can cause detrimental financial and relational turmoil in our lives, which can lead to a spiral of negative consequences.  With one, however, these situations are often downgraded to a frustrating inconvenience.  Recently, host Travis Shelton experienced his own curveball when his car needed nearly $5,000 of work.  Ouch!  In today's episode, we discuss some of the questions surrounding emergency funds, then lean heavy into the question of how much each of us should have in our respective funds.  It's different for everyone, and we hope to give you the tools to determine the right amount for you.
