For about 20 summers, Karen Schoepflin Hagen hit the road and showed off her quilts in gymnasiums and cafeterias across the Western U.S. Now, the quilts she’s made over the past 45 years — hundreds of them! — cover the walls of the former Masonic Lodge in Genesee and are available for public viewing. “To me, it’s just a dream come true,” Karen said.

The two-story building on the corner of Laurel Street and Ash Avenue is called Kascha Quilts — named after the first two letters in each of her names. 

The public can view Karen’s work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call (208) 285-1786. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted.

Our visit to the museum was a treat! Karen's enthusiasm and humor are infectious, and she has so many original ways to use fabric and create dimension and depth in her quilts.

Timna Tarr comes from a long line of quilters but did not begin quilting until after studying art history in college. She bought her first longarm in 2001 and began quilting clients' quilts shortly thereafter. Timna’s own nationally award-winning quilts are in private and corporate collections. They have also been seen in numerous exhibits, magazines, and books as well as on The Quilt Show and Quilting Arts TV.  Timna is a designer for Studio e Fabrics and is an in-demand teacher and speaker. She lives in South Hadley, MA and works out of her studio in Holyoke, MA.

In this episode we chat about Timna's imaginative quilt designs, which start with WHAT IF? She introduces us to her Noble Menagerie (which is heading off to Houston as a special exhibit!) and gives some tips for color selection, fabric choices, and creating movement when doing your own explorations.

Kim Soper of Feel Good Fibers gives us some really good life lessons here! "It's about BETTER, not PERFECT".... and "if your space is small you have to have less stuff". Those are words to live by!

Kim has some really transformative thoughts about creating a crafting space that you love and that inspires you, plus she offers concrete help in this area to sewists. De-cluttering, self-care, using and re-using, studio re-sets....these are just a few of the super helpful topics she covers.

You really should check out the fabric shop on her website - it's unlike anything I've seen before. It's peer-to-peer fabric shopping, providing a place for sewists to pass on fabric they don't love any more, and find new enthusiasm in someone else's previously loved yardage.

Meri and I have been sisters-in-law for over 30 years, so we share a lot of crafting history. She's not afraid to try things - from beekeeping to shearing sheep and carding wool to knitting socks to soap-making to toothbrush rug-making....she's tried 'em all. I think we forgot to talk about mummifying a chicken with the homeshooled grandkids - but, yeah, she's done that too.  We'll save that for next time!
