Mech Ado About Nothing episodes

  • Why is Any of this Happening (G Reco 1/3)

We try to make sense of this show and end up enjoying ourselves way more than expected. We've got a jam packed Mech Corner, loosely justified JRPG comparisons, and (finally) an explanation for how pilots poop in mobile suits.

  • Americans Hate Mecha and Taxis (Patlabor 5/5)

We finish up Patlabor and come to terms with our terrible taste. We look back on the whole series and identify its highs, lows, and very many middles. (NOTE: at some point Ian incorrectly refers to Kumagami as an anime-original character and wants to preempt any corrections).

  • Too Many Terrorists (Patlabor 4/5)

Absolutely nothing happens in these episodes of Patlabor, so we resort to reading online reviews and figuring out the core concepts behind ""humor."" We come face to face with our greatest fear: disliking a show everyone else likes.

  • Super Ghosts & Griffins (Patlabor 3/5)

Patlabor gets serious this week as we cover a huge chunk of episodes. Ian agonizes over not laughing at the jokes, Dan misses Kanuka Clancy, and we both feel a bit like the show is squandering great opportunities.

  • Nina and Gato Sitting in a Tree (Stardust Memory 2/2)

We try to wrap our heads around the disaster that is Stardust Memory's late-game twist. We also commemorate the criminally underutilized Cima, celebrate the excellent pacing and action, and imagine what it would be like to date Anavel Gato. All in all, we have a better time than expected.

  • Pretty and Stupid (Stardust Memory 1/2)

We dive in to Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. This show may be one of the best animated mecha shows of all time but boy is every character completely insufferable. We talk about the style of the show, how little we know about anime production, and why half the cast should just permanently live in the brig. At least the mechs are great!

  • Texmexium. Texmexium? Texmexium. (Gunhed)

We struggle to recall exactly what happened in this 1989 cult classic mecha film. Everything about it feels like a fever dream, from the effects, to the acting, to the plot (or what we think is the plot). The guy from Macross worked on this? The director disavowed it? Everyone forgot what baseball is in just twenty years? No matter the case, this movie is a hoot.

  • None of these Twists are Good (Gargantia 2/2)

Gargantia is somehow both far too short and way too long. We talk about the major twists in the plot as well as the overall structure of the show (and how neither make any sense). If you love anime and hate subtlety, you may actually enjoy these episodes.
