Mech Ado About Nothing

Our third main character is introduced this week and we have lots of thoughts! We try to keep track of all our side characters' intricate neuroses, Gendo takes a business trip to the South Pole, and the Angels just keep coming. It's a crazy discussion and we do it all dressed in yoga pants and crop tops.

We jump on the Evangelion bandwagon in our coverage of the first 7 episodes. We talk about the ideal circumstances to watch this show, its unique mood and characters, and whether or not Eva even qualifies as a mech show it absolutely does don't @ me.

We wrap up the first major chunk of UC Gundam (and our time in movieland) with Char's Counterattack! Ian obsesses over the character's outfits and Char's increasingly distressing moral choices, we talk about the difference in hateability between Quess and Hathaway, and also we get into the military industrial complex a little.

We tackle the 2013 live action, actual-human-starring movie Pacific Rim, directed by Oscar Award Winning Guillermo Del Toro. This movie lifts heavily from kaiju and mech media but misses where it counts, which mostly means half the characters look identical and have unbelievably lame motivations and backstories. Also, Dan really wastes most of this episode trying to convince Ian they're drift compatible.

We watch the questionable sequel to Gainax's Gunbuster, and try to wrap our heads around the completely different tone, outrageous yet somehow derivative characters, and uncomfortable sexual assault. Dan also has a bit of a crisis this episode thinking about college so that's fun!

We dive into the compilation movie of the first season of Space Battleship Yamato, our oldest show yet! There's a lot of history (anime and otherwise) to unpack here as we talk about the shows' lasting influence, how storytelling has changed over the years, and oh boy there's a really sticky talk about whether or not the use of Yamato qualifies as neo-Imperialist propaganda.

We watch the movie version of Macross Plus and have a deeply confused time. We try to pick apart the love triangle and come away feeling like almost everyone is too awful to care about. We try to figure out the killer AI story but can't find it in ourselves to care. At least the world-building is nice.

We return to Patlabor with the first movie, and really enjoy the change of pace and tone. We talk about cyberpunk, anime's use of Biblical symbolism, and how to fit in all of a TV shows characters into a 100 minute movie. Ian goes nuts for Captain Gotoh, and everyone loves Kanuka Clancy.

Kill em all Tomino strikes in our last episode of Zeta Gundam! We discuss the ending to the show, its high mortality rate, and whether (despite its length) Zeta Gundam ends too abruptly. We also discuss the wider Gundam themes and have a good time in the Mech Corner.

Axis has arrived in the Earth Sphere, and Char gives a speech! These ten episodes are some of the most exciting Gundam has to offer. Also, people continue to trust Scirocco, Jerid finally gets a win, and Mr. Wong should take a long walk off a short catapult deck.
