They say "don't explain the joke." But what about examining and analyzing a joke from a mechanical design perspective? The titular mecha of Megas XLR is built out of a (surprisingly large) pile of mecha anime jokes and references. Do those elements come together to be a design with its own merit?

I talk about Ippei Gyoubu, Takayuki Yanase, Kunio Okawara, and more, all the time. But credit to the new kids: JNTHED may only have Witch from Mercury under his belt so far, but he's doing impressive work! Today's very spoiler-y, so I don't want to say too much in these notes, but... damn the Calibarn is cool.

Bonus episode! On the advice of a listener (thank you Jamie!) we've decided to get ourselves excited for the upcoming Netflix CGI Gundam show by discussing its few designs that are already public. Please enjoy.

We're not done with Red Frames! Well. We sort of are. There's the Kai, of course. And then, frankly, there's a lot of BS. I like some of the BS! But it is still kinda BS. Well. Maybe that's hard on the Sengoku Astray. That guy's legit. But the Chinyaguy? Hmm. Hmm.

FRIEND FRIEND FRIEND FRIEND. Man, I really gotta watch G-Reco, huh? This guy is such a PAL! That's Chappie! That's a gonk droid with a face! There are only two mobile suits in the family, but even with so little, the Recten is an instant classic. And yet it has no gunpla! Tapping my foot, Sunrise....

Look... the East is burning red. Across worlds, across timelines, this line of G Gundam strikes a chord as SEED's eastern kingdom of Not-Japan, Orb, creates a red gundam to bear a katana. Oh, perhaps that's not quite the order of events, since it didn't get its sword until later. But other SEED media has shown that Orb will make katana for their mobile suits, so perhaps it was going to happen one way or the other....

I don't need Char clones. I need Gallant Char clones. How come none of these boys have a theme as banger as Char's from 0079? yeah sure the robot's fine, it's giving like, ps1 breath of fire, or xenogears as dylan said, but anyway back to talking about MUSIC....

With our rotating chair of many guests over on Novel Not New, it's a rare treat to have Dylan on the show. This being the second time (and with the first not being very Mechanista-compatible) we thought it would be fun to have the two shows tie into each other! Join us for the aircraft of Ace Combat 3!

From such humble beginnings. You know, you could say that about both the Galluss family of mobile suits, AND Mashymre Cello, really. Debuting as the slapstick villain of the week, leading the charge with Open Cockpit Hijinks, various mecha designers take this (already cool) design (when it's not the punchline of a joke) and turn it into a variety of cool friends.

It's been a while, but it's time for another cleanup episode! Remember, if you listen to an episode and we don't discuss a variant, or predecessor model, or a successor model, or what have you, please go ahead and DM me to let me know! If it's too big, it'll be its own ep someday, but if it's a little thing, it belongs on the cleanup list!
