Anitra and Cecilia sit down with Dr. Kevin Isaak, Med Legs' first non-Penn-affiliated guest. Dr. Isaak was born in Argentina and moved to Georgia with his family when he was 10 y.o. He attended the University of Georgia for undergrad, earned his M.D. at Morehouse School of Medicine, and is currently a third-year internal medicine resident in Marietta, Georgia. In this episode, we learn about his life in Argentina and then here in the U.S., his decision to pursue an M.D., and his experience at an HBCU (historically black colleges and universities).

With medical school application season well underway, we’re sitting down with Dr. Neha Vapiwala at the University of Pennsylvania to discuss concerns first generation and/or low income (FGLI) applicants may have during this time.

Dr. Vapiwala, a FGLI individual herself, is the Associate Dean of Admissions at the Perelman School of Medicine and Faculty Advisor to the Penn Med FGLI Student Group (formerly known as LIFT US UP. She is also a Professor and Vice Chair of Education in Radiation Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and specializes in the treatment of patients with genitourinary cancers.

In this episode of Med Legs, Dr. Vapiwala shares her own FGLI experience in medicine, how admissions committees take applicants’ FGLI status into account, and the resources FGLI students can seek out during the application cycle, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
