Most people know to avoid the phrase “no comment” during a media interview. Doing so usually amounts to an overly curt or abrupt response that suggests the interviewee is hiding something. However, there are other effective ways to say the same thing – without having those two words attributed to you in print.
At an event at Salem State University in Massachusetts last week, New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady was asked about the alleged deflation of footballs used in the AFC title game earlier this year. His answer put to use a tried and true three-step PR technique:
* Tell the reporter you can’t answer the question.
* Explain why you can’t answer.
* Bridge to a key message.
On this week’s episode, we examine Tom Brady’s “no comment” and ponder whether it was an effective PR move by the star NFL quarterback.
NOTE: This episode was broadcast live on Meerkat as it was being recorded on Sunday, May 10. As a result, we incorporated instant feedback from viewers.
