Heart attacks can strike anyone, and the difference between life and death often comes down to precious seconds. Hear from James Stewart, the engineer, inventor, and CEO of SMHeartCard, on the personal motivation that drove him to create a life-saving solution, and learn from Dr. Neal Davies, professor in pharmaceutical sciences, about the rigorous testing of the SMHeartCard in his lab that ensures its life-saving reliability.

A story of innovation, urgency, and a commitment to make sure no time is wasted during a heart attack.

The smheartcard is a compact, credit-card sized container specifically engineered to carry and protect the two most critical medications needed immediately during a suspected heart attack or severe angina: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and Nitroglycerin (NTG). Its patented technology is designed to seal and stabilize the highly sensitive Nitroglycerin pills against degradation from light, oxygen, and moisture for at least six months, ensuring the medication remains potent and effective when it matters most. Clinically validated and peer-reviewed in publications like the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the smheartcard’s core purpose is convenience and immediate access. Because a cardiac event can happen anywhere, this small, durable card is designed to be carried everywhere—in a wallet, pocket, or purse—bridging the crucial time gap between the onset of symptoms and arrival of professional medical help by providing life-saving medications instantly.

  • Extra Mile Pediatrics: Walking the Extra Mile for Every Child's Health.

    Guest Introduction:

What does it take to truly go the extra mile? Join me in the next episode as I discuss with Dr. Jeff Mapp how Extra Mile Pediatrics is transforming lives through sustainable care. We'll dive into their unique model of revisiting children in underserved communities every six months. A story of dedication, hope, and a promise kept.

Extra Mile Pediatrics is an NGO dedicated to providing repeated, quality pediatric healthcare to children in underserved communities in Guatemala and El Salvador. Their innovative approach to care focuses on sustainability and a holistic understanding of health. Instead of one-time medical missions, they build long-term relationships with the same communities, families, and local leaders. By returning every six months, they are able to track a child's growth and development over time, which is critical for identifying and treating foundational health issues. Their holistic model goes beyond the clinic by addressing critical factors like access to clean water, providing health and wellness education, and offering specialized services such as telehealth speech therapy. This commitment ensures that the positive health changes they create are not just temporary fixes, but a lasting foundation for a healthier future.

    Guest Introduction:
Dr. Kishor Wasan's work in pharmaceutical sciences has been recognized with over 25 awards, and he's published more than 550 research papers, focusing on how drugs are delivered in the body. As the former associate dean of Research at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and the co-founder of the Neglected Global Disease Initiative at the same university, Dr. Kishor Wasan has dedicated a large part of his life to finding solutions for diseases that often get overlooked. In particular, he's developing an oral, less toxic form of a drug called Amphotericin B, which is currently in clinical trials to treat Leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease that devastates many impoverished areas of the world. Let's jump into the episode and hear the story by Dr. Wasan himself.

  • The international medical student series: Stories from a 2nd year medical student in the Caribbean

Caribbean medical schools have gained a lot of popularity during recent years and have become increasingly attractive, and an alternative pathway of studying medicine in English abroad. These universities usually model their medical programs after American medical schools and allow their students the opportunity to practice medicine in the U.S upon graduation.

In this conversation I’ll be speaking to Neisha, a 2nd year medical student at the American University of Antigua, located on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. She’ll be sharing her story of what life is like, being an international medical student in the Caribbean and how she shares her medical journey with others.
