The era of genomic medicine has barely begun, but visionaries are already looking past the genome to the proteome and the metabolome. Genes were only the beginning of a revolution in medicine. We talk to the chairman of a new National Academy of Sciences report spelling out the critical importance of the new science of toxicogenomics--in which the interactions between genes and the environment become central. Cigarette smoking is the classic example: 90 percent of smokers do NOT get lung cancer. It takes the combination of tobacco smoke and the right (or wrong) genes to cause the disease.
