mr. eksé has been painting for close to three decades, out of orlando west, soweto, a few streets from where june 16 happened. two things made him, he says: "hip-hop and the revolution."
we sat down at indoni arts house, where his work shows on the mile from thursday 1 october, to talk about:
• how he got his name: "you don't get to give yourself a title, you get given a title"
• learning letters off dondi white, and why a tag takes as much skill as a piece
• taking soweto graff to the concreto festival in fortaleza, brazil, "where no south africans really go"
• making a living from it: "the only thing you need to be struggling with is how to put your work down"
• graffiti bringing "beauty to our neglected and forgotten spaces"
• joburg turning 140 this year, and why nobody else is marking it
• sunday drives to the dam, and why melville is his green zone
this is our fourth artist spotlight. every month, an artist showing on the mile makes the poster.
his show runs for the month. tickets on quicket: free walk-in, r150 self-guided explorer with the shuttle, or r450 premium guided tour with aubrey: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/381177-melville-art-mile/
