The Memoir of my Aunt, Jane Austen has garnered more attention than I ever anticipated. The enthusiastic reviews in periodicals, along with the heartfelt letters Ive received from readers both known and unknown, reveal a lasting fascination with every detail of her life. This response inspires me to present a Second Edition of the Memoir, enriched with additional content that I initially hesitated to include. In this new edition, the narrative has been expanded, featuring more letters and a delightful glimpse into her childhood stories. Additionally, Ive included the cancelled chapter of ‘Persuasion’ at the behest of readers, along with a fragment of a story titled ‘The Watsons’ and excerpts from a novel she began shortly before her passing. The highlight is a never-before-published short tale called ‘Lady Susan.’ I acknowledge the limitations of my first edition, where much of this material was either unknown or unavailable to me. I hope readers will appreciate the effort to recover these precious memories, long buried in the depths of time. - James Edward Austen-Leigh in the Preface to Memoir of Jane Austen
