The Grizzlies came back home from LA 0-2 in the 2013 first round playoffs, but LA would not win another game. The Grizzlies took control of the series and, in the process, left us with one of the most memorable games in franchise history: a Game 6 closeout at FedEx Forum. Plus, the Grizzlies dominate the Thunder en route to a disappointing Western Conference Finals showdown with the Spurs. Join Marvin and Anthony and special guest Kevin Lipe as we close the book on this most memorable season.
The 2012 - 2013 Memphis Grizzlies season was among the most consequential in franchise history. They traded Rudy Gay, up that point a person seen as a franchise pillar. Marc Gasol won Defensive Player of the Year. The team hit 56 wins - a record that still stands today (although it is now tied with the 2021 - 2022 season). And perhaps most importantly, the Grizzlies went deeper in the playoffs than they had before or since - reaching the Western Conference Finals. Long time Grizzlies writer Kevin Lipe joins Marvin and Anthony to break down this oh so important season and postseason run for the Grizzlies. This is an episode you do not want to miss.

The Memphis Grizzlies were hot on the heels of a first playoff victory in 2011 - beating San Antonio in 6 and pushing the KD-led Thunder to 7 games. And then the 2011 lockout hit: no basketball until the day after Christmas. With the fall gone and momentum flagging, things get worse when Z-bo goes down with a knee injury 8 games into the season. But fast forward four months filled with Marreese Speights playing well at the 4 and the Grizzlies finish 41 - 25 to take the 4 seed in the west - home court advantage for the first time. The Grizzlies squared off with a young Clippers team featuring Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. The slugfest that followed marked the beginning of a real rivalry between two of the best in the west. Marvin and Anthony break it all down with our guest Michael Sheffield in part five of our Memphis Grizzlies oral history.

Jon Roser from The Chris Vernon Show joins the pod this week to talk about the start of the Grizzlies Core Four Era. We discuss the acquisition of Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, the tough start to the 2010 - 2011 campaign, the turnaround in early 2011 - and the legendary interview where Tony Allen coins the phrase 'All Heart, Grit Grind.'
Roser narrates the first Grizzlies playoff victories - both single game and series victories over the Spurs - and we talk about the start of what what would be a multi-year slug fest with the mighty OKC Thunder led by Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. Plus, we touch on the current Grizzlies roster and how it rhymes a just little bit with these Grizzlies of yesteryear. All that and more on a brand new episode of Memphis Hardwood!
