In this episode Pamela and Steven explore how rifts between 2 close friends can happen due to different perspectives concerning the same event. We learn from the storyline in MEN? The Musical that Laila has been offered a role in Shadows Boutique by the interviewer (remember Dominque in Episode 5 the interview

scene).

Unbeknown at the time, it transpires that Dominque is in a relationship with Zahida’s ex husband. Laila sees the acceptance of job offer as an opportunity, while Zahida sees this as a betrayal. Neither woman is trying to hurt the other. Yet they find themselves completely at odds.

Pamela and Steven discuss different intentions, different values. and different conclusions reached by both parties. They also discuss how Laila and Zahida might have dealt with the situation without causing a rift to their relationship.

In this episode Pamela and Steven observe how one of the main female characters Zahida deals with the realisation that her marriage is finally over. Zahida appears on the face of it to be strong and confident, dealing with her situation. This is up to the point when she receives the actual divorce papers. And then everything changes:

Zahida says something that we think many people will recognise.“Why do I feel like somebody’s just died?” Whether you’ve experienced divorce or not, many of us know what it feels like when something meaningful comes to an end. Perhaps it was: a marriage / relationship / friendship / family connection / career / a business / a dream you held for years.

Sometimes the paperwork, the phone call or the final conversation suddenly makes us realise… “This really is over.”

That can bring with it a genuine sense of grief. Pamela and Steven discuss how this feels and thoughts on how to possibly deal with the situation.

After the wonderfully comic interview scene (remember episode 5 ‘Who hires a mother of 3’) Laila finally lands a position at Shadows Boutique. Its not the role she wished for - not exactly her dream job, so why is she so positive about this development? She has just finished the personal elevation event. This taught her to reflect on her current situation. She sees the role as an opportunity, a stepping stone to something bigger. We sometimes become so focused on the destination we overlook the opportunity right in front of us. Life doesn’t always take us along the road we planned. Here we discover Laila has gained her voice by surrendering to her situation.

Carlos, the salsa instructor, simply explains that in salsa the man traditionally leads and the woman follows. So, Jennifer should simply let her dance partner Paddy lead.
