Have you ever gone to bed exhausted, thinking, “I am so tired. I’m going to sleep so good tonight,” only to wake up at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning wide awake?
Maybe you’re hot. Maybe your mind is racing about work, your kids, your finances, or something else going on in your life. Or maybe you have no idea why you’re awake. You just know that you are.
And then when you finally fall back asleep, you wake up feeling like you barely slept.
If this sounds familiar, especially during perimenopause or menopause, there may be more going on than simply needing to go to bed earlier.
In this episode of Menopause Breakthrough, we’re taking a closer look at what actually happens in your body while you sleep and why sleep can become more challenging during menopause.
In this episode, we talk about:
• The different stages of sleep and why each one matters
• The role of deep sleep in restoration and repair
• Why REM sleep is important for learning, memory, and processing information
• How sleep may contribute to what we call “menopause brain fog”
• The connection between estrogen, the hypothalamus, body temperature, and sleep
• Why hot flashes and night sweats can interrupt your sleep
• How stress and an activated nervous system can keep you awake
• How your bedroom environment, caffeine, alcohol, and evening eating habits may affect your sleep
• Medical conditions that can interfere with sleep and when it may be time to talk with your healthcare provider
• Simple ways to create better conditions for sleep
Become a Sleep Detective
This week, I want you to stop simply asking, “How many hours did I sleep?”
Start paying attention to how you actually feel.
When did you go to bed?
When do you think you actually fell asleep?
Did you wake up during the night?
What woke you up?
And most importantly, how did you feel the next morning?
Did you feel refreshed, foggy, irritable, or exhausted?
You may begin to notice patterns that you didn't recognize before.
Awareness gives you information, and information gives you somewhere to start.
One thing I want you to remember
Sleep isn't just about the number of hours you spend in bed.
While you're sleeping, your brain and body are doing important work. Your brain is processing information, your memory is being supported, your body is moving through restorative sleep stages, and your nervous system has an opportunity to settle.
So if you're struggling with sleep during menopause, don't automatically assume, “This is just menopause” or “This is just what happens as I get older.”
Get curious.
Ask questions.
Pay attention to what your body is telling you.
You deserve more than simply surviving your nights and dragging yourself through your days.
You deserve to wake up and feel like yourself again.
Remember: You are the leader of your health.

Have you ever reached a point in midlife where you are doing what you have always done, eating relatively the same way, exercising, and trying to take care of yourself, yet your body starts responding differently?
Maybe your waistline is changing.
Maybe you are gaining weight around your middle.
Maybe you are more tired or not sleeping as well.
And you find yourself asking:
“What is happening to my body?”
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.
In this episode, we are taking a closer look at menopause weight gain and why there may not be one simple answer.
Menopause Weight Gain Is More Than a Weight Problem
Weight gain during the menopause transition is often treated as though it is simply a matter of eating less and exercising more.
But menopause involves changes in hormones, body composition, sleep, physical activity, appetite, and metabolism. These changes can interact with one another.
That is why I believe we need to move beyond asking:
“What can I take to lose the weight?”
and begin asking:
“What is actually going on in my body?”
What Is Metabolic Health?
Metabolic health is essentially about how well your body manages and uses energy.
It involves more than your weight or whether you have diabetes. Blood glucose, insulin function, blood pressure, blood lipids, waist circumference, body composition, and cardiovascular risk can all be part of the bigger picture.
One important piece of that picture is insulin.
Think of insulin as a key that helps glucose move from your bloodstream into your cells, where it can be used for energy or stored.
When the cells become less responsive to insulin, the body may need to produce more insulin to accomplish the same job. This is known as insulin resistance.
Not every woman going through menopause has insulin resistance. But understanding insulin function helps us appreciate why menopause weight changes should not automatically be reduced to a simple calorie problem.
What Does the New Research Tell Us?
A 2026 study published in JAMA Network Open followed 38,283 women over approximately 12 years surrounding menopause and examined 11 dietary patterns in relation to weight gain and obesity.
The researchers found that certain dietary patterns were associated with less weight gain and lower obesity risk.
One was a low insulinemic dietary pattern, which focuses on an overall eating pattern that produces a lower insulin response.
The other was the Planetary Health Diet, a primarily plant forward eating pattern emphasizing foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, while limiting red and processed meat and other highly processed foods.
Importantly, this was an observational study. That means the findings show an association, not proof that one particular diet causes less weight gain.
Still, the research adds to an important conversation: the quality and overall pattern of what we eat may matter, not simply the number on the scale.
What About Mounjaro, Zepbound and Other Medications?
We also cannot talk about menopause weight management today without acknowledging the growing use of medications such as GLP 1 medications.
Tirzepatide, sold under the brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound, works on two incretin pathways, GIP and GLP 1. These pathways influence appetite, food intake and glucose regulation.
These medications can be appropriate and effective tools for some people.
I am not anti-medication.
But medication does not mean we stop asking questions about the rest of the health picture.
A recent Mayo Clinic observational study found that postmenopausal women taking menopausal hormone therapy while also using tirzepatide experienced greater weight loss than women taking tirzepatide alone. However, because the study was observational, researchers cannot conclude that hormone therapy caused the additional weight loss.
That distinction matters.
Promising research is not the same as definitive evidence.
What About Supplements?
Women are also being bombarded with recommendations for supplements.
Magnesium.
Berberine.
Hormone balancing supplements.
Menopause formulas.
Fat burning products.
It can become overwhelming.
And this is where I want to remind you:
Natural does not automatically mean safe. Pharmaceutical does not automatically mean bad.
Both deserve evidence.
Both deserve context.
And both should be considered in the context of the individual woman.
From a Solution Mindset to a Systems Mindset
Perhaps one of the biggest mindset shifts we can make during midlife is moving from a solution mindset to a systems mindset.
Instead of asking:
“What is the one thing that will fix this?”
we can ask:
“What are the things contributing to what I am experiencing?”
That might include:
• Hormonal changes
• Insulin resistance or altered insulin function
• Loss of muscle mass
• Nutrition
• Protein intake
• Sleep
• Stress
• Physical activity
• Resistance training
• Medications
• Supplements
• Changes in appetite or eating patterns
Sometimes there is not one culprit.
There may be several pieces of the puzzle.
And that is why your body is better understood as a system rather than a collection of isolated symptoms.
Medication and Lifestyle Can Coexist
For some women, medical treatment may be an important part of their health strategy. For others, nutrition, strength training, sleep, stress management, or other interventions may play a larger role.
Sometimes it may be a combination.
The goal should not be to find the perfect solution for every woman.
The goal should be to understand what this particular woman needs.

Have you ever wondered, “Is it time for something different?”
You may be successful in your career and still find yourself feeling exhausted, foggy, overwhelmed, or disconnected from work that once felt manageable.
For many professional women, menopause arrives during a season when life is already changing. Children may be becoming more independent, aging parents may need more support, priorities may be shifting, and suddenly the way you experience your career can feel very different.
But before you hand in your resignation or convince yourself that you simply need to push through, there is another question worth asking:
Am I experiencing a symptom that needs attention, or am I receiving a signal that something needs to change?
In this episode, we explore how menopause can influence the way you experience your career and introduce a simple framework to help you determine whether it is time to stay, slow down, or pivot.
In This Episode, We Explore
• Why menopause can trigger deeper reflection about your career and what you truly want
• How fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, and other symptoms can make a demanding job feel harder than it once did
• The difference between a physical symptom and genuine career misalignment
• Why addressing your health first can give you greater clarity before making major career decisions
• Three possible paths: Stay, Slow Down, or Pivot
• What slowing down could actually look like in your career
• When a career pivot may be pointing toward a new role, industry, business, or season of rest
• The financial and family realities that should be part of the decision
• Why you do not have to make a major career decision in a moment of exhaustion
The Stay, Slow Down, or Pivot Framework
Stay
You still find meaning in your work, but your physical symptoms are making it harder to perform at the level you once did.
This may be the season to focus on your health, address underlying contributors to your symptoms, advocate for appropriate workplace support, and explore accommodations that allow you to continue doing work you value.
Slow Down
You may not want to leave your career, but the current pace or scope is no longer sustainable.
Slowing down could mean renegotiating responsibilities, reducing your workload, changing positions, adjusting your schedule, or having an honest conversation with your manager or HR.
Slowing down is not failure.
Sometimes it is wisdom.
Pivot
Sometimes menopause brings clarity about something that has been true for a long time.
You may realize that your current role, industry, workplace, or career path no longer aligns with your values or the life you want to create.
A pivot could mean pursuing a different role, changing industries, starting a business, or intentionally taking a season of rest before your next chapter.
Questions to Consider
Before making a major career decision, take some time to sit with these questions:
If the fatigue and brain fog disappeared tomorrow, would I still want to leave this job?
What would slowing down actually look like for me?
What responsibilities could I release, delegate, or renegotiate?
What do I need financially before making a change?
How would a career decision affect my family?
What is my body telling me?
What is God showing me in this season?
Key Takeaways
Reflection for This Week
Before you make a decision about your career, give yourself permission to pause.
Ask yourself:
“What would change if I stopped asking what I should do and started asking what I truly need in this season?”
Sometimes the answer is not to leave.
Sometimes it is not to stay.
Sometimes the answer is to give yourself enough space to hear what comes next.

With so many supplements marketed to women during menopause, it can be overwhelming to know what to trust. How do you know if a supplement is actually high quality? What should you look for on the label? And how can you make sure what you are taking is appropriate for your individual health needs?
In this episode of Menopause Breakthrough, Katina Smith takes us Beyond the Bottle for an honest and practical conversation about choosing quality supplements and becoming a more informed participant in your health journey.
This conversation is not about telling you that you need supplements or recommending a particular product or brand. Katina emphasizes that supplements are not for everyone, and more supplements do not automatically mean better health. Instead, supplements should be viewed as support tools that complement the foundation of your health, including nourishing food, quality sleep, stress regulation, movement, hydration, and other healthy lifestyle practices.
Katina walks through several important factors to consider when evaluating a supplement, starting with third-party testing. Independent testing can provide an additional layer of verification by helping confirm that a product contains the ingredients and amounts listed on the label and may also evaluate certain contamination concerns.
You’ll also learn why it is important to understand certifications and verification marks rather than simply assuming that a logo means a product is automatically better. Katina discusses examples such as NSF and USP and encourages listeners to ask a simple but important question: What does this certification actually verify?
The conversation also explores purity, manufacturing standards, identity testing, and consistency. What is included in a supplement matters, but so does what is not included. Understanding unnecessary fillers, additives, allergens, manufacturing practices, and ingredient verification can help you make more informed choices.
Katina also discusses several brands commonly familiar in functional and integrative health settings, while emphasizing that a reputable brand does not automatically mean every product from that brand is right for you. Your symptoms, health history, medications, other supplements, and individual needs all matter.
Instead of simply asking, “Is this a good brand?”, consider asking:
“Is this particular product appropriate for me and my health goals?”
Before adding another supplement to your routine, Katina encourages you to pause and consider your intention. What are you actually trying to support or change? Has the product been independently tested or verified? Do you understand what is inside it? And perhaps most importantly, have you addressed the foundation first?
Your sleep, nutrition, stress levels, movement, and hydration all play an important role in your overall well-being. Sometimes the answer is not another supplement. Sometimes the answer is strengthening the foundation.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
Ultimately, the goal is not to collect more supplements. It is to become a more informed and thoughtful decision-maker about your health.
The goal is better health, not simply more bottles.
When you know how to look beyond the bottle, you can make choices with greater clarity, intention, and confidence.
Thank you for joining Katina for another episode of Menopause Breakthrough. Until next time, take care of yourself, listen to your body, and remember that your health is worth paying attention to.

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you were there? Lost your train of thought during a conversation? Forgotten a name you know you should remember?
If so, you are not alone.
Many women experience changes in memory, focus, and concentration during perimenopause and menopause. These changes can be frustrating, but they are also common. In this episode, we explore why these cognitive changes occur, the important role estrogen plays in brain health, and practical lifestyle strategies that can help support your brain during midlife.
You'll learn how declining estrogen affects the brain and why researchers are paying closer attention to the connection between menopause, cognitive health, and Alzheimer's disease. Most importantly, you'll discover evidence informed, everyday habits that can help protect your brain and support long term cognitive wellness.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
Six Ways to Support Your Brain During Menopause
Key Takeaway
Your brain is not separate from the rest of your body.
The food you eat, the quality of your sleep, your daily movement, your stress levels, and your relationships all work together to influence your brain health.
While you cannot control every aspect of aging, you can make choices each day that help support healthy cognitive function for years to come.
Reflection Question
What is one thing you can begin doing this week to better support your brain?
Small, consistent actions often lead to the greatest transformation.

What if you could help create a workplace where women feel seen, supported, and empowered throughout menopause?
Many women spend years navigating hot flashes, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms while continuing to meet the demands of their careers. Yet many organizations still lack the education, resources, and support systems employees need to thrive during this stage of life.
In this episode, I share why Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) can be a powerful way to advocate for meaningful workplace change and provide a practical, step by step framework for starting one within your organization.
Whether you are an employee, manager, Human Resources professional, or organizational leader, this episode will help you understand how a Menopause ERG can improve employee well being while also supporting engagement, retention, and organizational health.
In This Episode You'll Learn
• Why menopause support is becoming a workplace priority
• The impact menopause can have on employee well being, productivity, absenteeism, and retention
• Why many women are not receiving the education and support they need
• How Employee Resource Groups can create connection, education, and advocacy
• A simple 12 step framework for launching a Menopause Employee Resource Group
The Steps to Starting a Menopause Employee Resource Group
Simple ERG Framework
Assess
Identify the need and gather employee interest.
Build
Develop your mission, business case, and leadership team.
Launch
Secure leadership approval, recruit members, and promote the group.
Sustain
Deliver ongoing value, measure outcomes, and develop future leaders.
Workplace Resources to Consider
A successful Menopause Employee Resource Group may include resources such as:
• Menopause education sessions
• Workplace accommodations guidance
• Policy templates
• Employee feedback surveys
• Communication guides for employees and leaders
• Privacy and confidentiality guidance
• Menopause symptoms and treatment education
• Menopause myths versus science
• Self advocacy and workplace communication tools
Key Statistics Discussed
Less than 20 percent of OB GYNs receive formal menopause training.
More than 80 percent of women report having only a basic understanding of menopause.
According to the Carrot Menopause in the Workplace Survey:
• 71 percent of respondents used more than 40 working hours as sick time due to menopause symptoms.
• 79 percent said working during menopause is challenging.
• 20 percent have considered leaving the workforce because of their symptoms.
These numbers highlight the importance of creating workplaces where women can continue to contribute, grow, and thrive.
Remember
Menopause is not the end of your career.
With education, advocacy, and organizational support, women can continue to lead, perform, and make meaningful contributions throughout every stage of midlife.
Sometimes meaningful workplace change begins with one person asking an important question:
"What if we created a better way to support women?"

Have you ever felt like your body changed overnight and no one could explain why?
Many women enter perimenopause and menopause expecting quick answers, only to discover that what worked in their 20s, 30s, and even early 40s no longer works. Weight gain, fatigue, sleep disruptions, mood changes, and brain fog often leave women searching for solutions.
In this episode, we explore why menopause requires a different approach and what it truly means to become the leader of your health.
Being a health leader does not mean becoming a medical expert. It means becoming an informed decision maker, asking better questions, and taking an active role in understanding and supporting your body.
We discuss four important qualities every health leader needs:
Patience
Menopause is not a sprint. Many women want immediate results after years of habits that may no longer serve their changing bodies.
In today's world, women are constantly being told that the answer is a supplement, pill, or injection. While medications and supplements may have a place, they are not a substitute for understanding what your body truly needs.
Lasting change requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to address root causes rather than chasing quick fixes.
Curiosity
Curiosity is one of the most powerful tools in your health journey.
Instead of accepting symptoms as your new normal, begin asking questions:
• Why am I tired all the time?
• Why am I gaining weight around my midsection?
• Why am I waking up at 3 a.m. every night?
• What is my body trying to tell me?
Your symptoms may be common, but they are still signals worth exploring.
Faith
When answers are not immediately available, faith helps us continue moving forward.
There are answers. Sometimes the journey requires trusting the process while continuing to seek wisdom and support.
Action
Knowledge alone does not create transformation.
Health leaders take action. They gather information, ask questions, seek appropriate support, and make consistent choices that align with their health goals.
Small actions practiced consistently often create the greatest results over time.
A Health Leader Knows Their Numbers
Just as successful organizations monitor key performance indicators, health leaders understand important health markers that provide insight into their overall well being.
These may include:
• Blood pressure
• Blood glucose
• Hemoglobin A1C
• Insulin
• Cholesterol
• Inflammation markers
• Vitamin D levels
• Cortisol
• Thyroid hormones
• Liver function
• Kidney function
Health leaders do not wait for a crisis before paying attention to these important indicators.
A Health Leader Takes Ownership
While genetics may influence risk, daily choices influence outcomes.
Taking ownership of your health means:
• Asking questions
• Seeking understanding
• Building healthy habits
• Advocating for yourself
• Working with qualified healthcare professionals
• Making informed decisions based on your unique needs
Your body is constantly communicating with you. The question is: Are you listening?
Key Takeaways
• Menopause requires a different approach than simply eating less and exercising more.
• Patience is essential for lasting results.
• Curiosity helps uncover the root causes behind symptoms.
• Faith provides strength during uncertain seasons.
• Action turns knowledge into transformation.
• Understanding your health markers empowers better decisions.
• You are your body's most important advocate.

Episode Overview
In this episode, we discuss the hidden cost of ignoring the signals your body is sending and why menopause can be a powerful wake up call rather than something to simply endure.
Knowledge Is Not Enough
Many women have listened to podcasts, read books, and gathered information about their health, yet knowledge alone does not create change.
Knowledge only becomes powerful when it is applied.
What will your life look like one year from now if you continue putting your health on hold?
Menopause: A New Chapter
Menopause is an invitation to reevaluate your health, your boundaries, your relationships, and how you manage stress.
Rather than viewing this season as a period of decline, consider it an opportunity to become stronger, wiser, and more intentional about your life and your health.
Are You Managing Symptoms or Solving the Problem?
Too often we focus on managing symptoms without understanding what is causing them.
Are you taking something to help you sleep without understanding why you cannot sleep?
Are you looking for more energy without understanding why you are exhausted?
We cannot continue playing the guessing game with our health. We must understand what is happening inside our bodies.
Three Important Markers Every Woman Should Understand
One of the most important things I encourage women to do is learn their numbers.
Blood Glucose
Blood glucose measures the amount of sugar in your bloodstream at a specific moment. As estrogen declines, blood sugar regulation often becomes more challenging, contributing to cravings, fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain.
Insulin
Insulin is the hormone that helps move glucose into your cells for energy. Elevated insulin levels can occur years before blood sugar levels become abnormal and are often linked to abdominal weight gain, increased hunger, energy crashes, and difficulty losing weight.
Inflammation
Inflammation often increases during perimenopause and menopause. Chronic inflammation has been associated with heart disease, cognitive decline, joint pain, fatigue, and other long term health concerns.
When glucose, insulin, and inflammation markers begin moving in the wrong direction together, they can reveal important clues about what may be driving many menopause related symptoms.
Becoming the Leader of Your Health
You have heard me say it before and I will say it again: You must become the leader of your health.
Think of yourself as the captain of a ship. To reach your destination, you need to understand how to navigate. The same is true for your health. Understanding what is happening inside your body allows you to make informed decisions that support your energy, vitality, and quality of life so you can achieve your health goals.
Final Thoughts
Menopause is not the end of your story. It is the beginning of a new chapter.
This is your opportunity to stop ignoring symptoms, start seeking answers, and take ownership of your health.
Your symptoms matter. Your health matters. And most importantly, you matter.
