  • #8: Loneliness in Menopause: Why You Feel It and How to Break Free

In this episode of Menopause Breakthrough, Katina opens up a powerful and heartfelt conversation about loneliness during menopause a topic many women feel but rarely talk about.

Hormone shifts, emotional changes, physical symptoms, changing relationships, and society’s silence around menopause can make this season feel isolating. But you are not alone and today's episode helps you understand why loneliness happens, how it affects women in midlife, and what you can do to feel connected again.

Katina also shares research from the U.S. Surgeon General and Harvard that reveals how common loneliness really is especially for adults ages 30–44. She explains why modern life, social media pressures, survival-mode living, and a lack of purpose can amplify feelings of disconnection.

Most importantly, she breaks down simple, practical ways to reconnect with yourself, rebuild community, and find emotional support during menopause.

    What you will Learn About

✓ What loneliness really feels like and why it’s more than just “being alone”

The Surgeon General defines loneliness as the gap between the meaningful connections we want versus what we actually have.

✓ Why loneliness is becoming more common

    Harvard research shows:

    • Nearly 30% of adults ages 30–44 feel often or always lonely
    • 24% of ages 18–29
    • 20% of ages 45–64
    • 10% of those 65+

Lower income and multi-racial identity adults report the highest levels of loneliness.

✓ How social media, news negativity, and perfectionism silence real struggles

Many people are comparing their real lives to curated online “highlight reels.”

✓ Why menopause can intensify loneliness

From hormonal changes to brain fog, sleepless nights, and shifting identities many women feel unseen or misunderstood. And too often, their symptoms are dismissed as “just stress.”

✓ How life transitions add even more emotional weight

Divorce, caregiving, job changes, grief, financial strain all can deepen feelings of isolation.

✓ Practical, real-world actions to break the loneliness cycle

Katina shares simple, doable steps like:

    • Reaching out to a friend
    • Joining a menopause-support community
    • Connecting with a practitioner who understands this season
    • Using journaling, prayer, and reflection
    • Serving others
    • Pursuing your God-given purpose and gifts

✓ A reminder of truth and hope

God’s love still exists. Good still exists. You are not walking this journey by yourself.

  • #7: How Functional Nutrition Can Benefit You During Menopause

    Episode snapshot

You’ll learn what functional nutrition is, how it grew out of functional medicine, and why a personalized, root-cause approach can help you move from just coping with symptoms to feeling more like yourself again.

    What functional nutrition really means

Functional nutrition is built on the principles of functional medicine—looking for the “why” behind your symptoms instead of just trying to cover them up. It focuses on the interconnected systems in your body (like your gut, hormones, brain, and immune system) and uses food, lifestyle, and environment to support balance, not just short-term relief.

You’ll hear how this is different from a one-size-fits-all diet: instead of asking, “What’s the best menopause diet?” the question becomes, “What does your body need right now to function well?” Functional nutrition pays attention to how food affects your energy, digestion, sleep, mood, and stress response during this stage of life.

You’ll also learn how functional nutrition grew out of the functional medicine movement, pioneered by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, often called the father of functional medicine. He helped lay the foundation for a model of care that looks at root causes, systems biology, and lifestyle as central to long-term health.

My Journey as a Functional Nutrition Practitioner

I will share with you how, as a Certified Functional Nutrition Practitioner, I serve as both health detective and coach. I don’t diagnose or replace your doctor; instead, I look at your whole story. I use nutrition, lifestyle changes, and sometimes targeted supplements to support issues like hot flashes, brain fog, fatigue, sleep problems, and mood swings.

    Bridging the Gap

Functional nutrition practitioners can help bridge the gap between you and your doctor, especially in a healthcare system that often feels rushed and symptom-focused. The goal is not to replace your primary care provider, but to be a partner with them. My goal is to help you understand recommendations, prepare better questions, and make sense of your lab results and treatment options.

    Why Functional Nutrition Matters

Menopause is one of the biggest transitions your body will ever go through, touching your hormones, brain, metabolism, mood, sleep, and more. Functional nutrition matters here because it looks beneath the surface of your symptoms to support the systems that are under stress, rather than just managing discomfort.

Instead of settling for “this is just how it is now,” you’ll hear how a functional approach can help you feel more energized, clear-headed, and emotionally steady—not by chasing quick fixes, but by aligning your food and lifestyle with what your body needs in this season. You’ll be encouraged to consider adding holistic practitioners to your care team so you can feel truly seen, heard, and supported.

  • #6: Why Exercise Is Important During Menopause

Many women dread the word exercise and I get it.
    You might be thinking,
    “I don’t have time,” or “I can’t join a gym,” or even “I don’t like exercising alone.”

But this kind of thinking can keep you from experiencing one of the most powerful tools for easing menopause symptoms and improving your overall well-being.
In this episode, we’re talking about why movement is so essential during menopause  and how to make it work
    for you, not against you.

    Here’s What You’ll Learn:

    1. How Exercise Reduces Common Symptoms
    • Helps ease hot flashes and night sweats especially with gentle movement like walking, yoga, or Pilates
    • Improves sleep quality so you can finally rest better

    2. How Movement Supports Mental Health
    • Boosts mood through “happy hormones” (endorphins!)
    • Reduces anxiety, irritability, and brain fog
    • Increases mental clarity and focus

    3. The Role of Exercise in Bone Health
    • Strength training and walking help prevent osteoporosis
    • Improves joint strength and flexibility

    4. Heart & Metabolic Health Benefits
    • Supports healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
    • Reduces heart disease risk as estrogen declines

    5. Weight & Energy Support
    • Boosts metabolism and helps manage midsection weight
    • Naturally increases energy and combats fatigue

🧘‍♀️ Best Exercises During Perimenopause & Menopause

✅ Strength Training (2–3x/week) – Builds muscle, strengthens bones, and supports metabolism
✅ Weight-Bearing Cardio – Brisk walking, hiking, dancing, or light jogging
✅ Low-Impact Cardio – Swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical
✅ Flexibility & Balance Work – Yoga, Pilates, or tai chi for calm and stability
✅ Mind-Body Exercise – Gentle stretching and breathwork to ease stress

    Exercises to Avoid or Limit

    • Excessive HIIT or long endurance workouts (can spike cortisol and worsen fatigue)
    • Overtraining without rest (can cause burnout or hormone imbalance)
    • High-impact jumping workouts that strain joints

    Getting Started

Start small, even a 20-minute walk three times a week is a great beginning.
Add strength training 2–3 times a week and build from there.
    Find movement you
enjoy like swimming, dancing, or walking with a friend all count!

Remember, you don’t have to do it alone.
Find a partner, neighbor, or group to keep you encouraged and consistent.

And most importantly, find a time of day that works best for you. Whether that’s early morning, during lunch, or in the evening. Consistency is what matters most.

  • #5: The Effects of Menopause on Your Identity

Menopause isn’t just a physical change, it can deeply affect how a woman sees herself.

For years, many women have tied their identity to roles like being a mother, wife, professional, or even to how youthful or energetic they feel. But when menopause arrives with changes in mood, energy, and body image (especially weight gain) it can leave a woman asking: “Who am I now?”

In today’s episode, we’re exploring how menopause impacts a woman’s sense of identity, and more importantly, how this season can become a powerful opportunity to redefine yourself with confidence, purpose, and peace.

     The Identity Shift in Midlife

Who really thinks about menopause before it happens?
In our society, we’ve been conditioned to live life a certain way go to school, get an education, work hard, climb the corporate ladder. But after all that, many women find themselves asking, “What’s next?”

In my coaching work, I’ve seen this pattern over and over. Women start to question their direction and purpose.

    They say things like:

    “I don’t know what’s next for me.”
“I want to do XYZ, but I don’t know how or if I can.”
“I feel like it’s too late.”

If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.

    The Silence Around Menopause

The big challenge is that we don’t talk about menopause.
It often just happens, and then women are left to figure it out or silently suffer through symptoms for years.

We need to do better as a society:

    • Supporting women in perimenopause and menopause, and
    • Preparing women in their 30s for what’s to come.

Unfortunately, menopause is often seen in a negative light:

    • “You’re moody or emotional.”
Hormonal shifts get dismissed as irritability instead of being understood as a natural transition. That’s why it’s so important to support your body with the right nutrients and focus on balancing hormones.
    • “You’re getting old.”
Menopause is unfairly tied to aging stereotypes, leading to feelings of invisibility or loss of value.
    • “It’s not that serious.”
Many underestimate its physical and emotional impact, assuming women should just “push through.” (That’s what my doctor told me,“Just wait until you get to menopause.”)
    • “You can’t handle stress anymore.”
At work, colleagues or family may misinterpret fatigue, brain fog, or anxiety as weakness or incompetence.
    • “It’s embarrassing to talk about.”
Some people avoid the topic altogether, leaving women feeling isolated.

     Reframing the Narrative

We need to see this season in a positive light:

    • “It’s a new season of wisdom and strength.”
In some cultures, menopause is celebrated as a rite of passage.
    • “There should be extra care and understanding right now.”
Support from spouses, friends, family and especially in the workplace, is vital. Many women leave their jobs because of burnout, sleepless nights, and brain fog, which shouldn’t be the norm.
    • “It’s a chance for renewal.”
This is a time for growth, self-discovery, and prioritizing your own needs.

  • #4: The Link Between Anxiety, Stress, and Menopause

Have you ever wondered why anxiety seems to spike during midlife—or why stress feels harder to manage during perimenopause or menopause?

In this episode, Katina dives deep into the powerful connection between anxiety, stress, and menopause, and shares how understanding this link can help you take back control of your mind, mood, and overall well-being.

    In This Episode, You’ll Learn

    • What anxiety really means, both scientifically and spiritually
    • How stress can lead to anxiety and throw your body out of alignment
    • The connection between hormones, cortisol, and gut health
    • Why perimenopause can make stress harder to handle
    • How to restore balance spiritually, physically, and emotionally

    Key Points

    • Anxiety isn’t “just in your head.” It’s often the body’s response to stress and hormonal shifts.
    • The word anxiety comes from Latin and Greek roots meaning “to choke,” “to press tightly,” or “to be pulled apart”, a powerful reflection of how it feels internally.
    • Cortisol, the stress hormone, can trigger anxiety, sleep issues, weight gain, and blood sugar imbalances.
    • Your gut microbiome plays a major role in mood and emotional regulation over 90% of serotonin is made in the gut!
    • Declining hormones during menopause make it harder for your body to regulate stress, but healing and balance are absolutely possible.
