After an argument amongst the disciples regarding "who was the greatest," Jesus places a child before them. He states that in the Kingdom of God the first are those who place themselves last as servants of others, particularly serving those of lowly status.

A group of men carry their paralyzed friend to the feet of Jesus, overcoming some significant barriers in the process. Assumedly, it was their hope that Jesus would heal the paralytic of his ailment, but to the surprise of everyone present, Jesus’ first action is to forgive the sins of their friend. Doubting his ability, some religious persons question Jesus, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Peter closes his letter to the “chosen exiles” in Asia Minor, and to us by equipping us to suffer well, to lead and be led well, and to be humble and sober-minded in light of our enemies. He inks his final words, “this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.”

Peter continues his exhortation to those God’s chosen people, living as exiles, with regard to suffering while living for God. Humility, unity, love and other calls make clear Peter’s intent: to help us look at Jesus, and look like Him. In his letter to those suffering for their faith in Christ, Peter shifts to practical ways that they ought to live in the contexts of their relationship with government, those whom they serve, and their spouses. Yet, all of this pragmatic guidance comes through the example of the Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ, who suffered for and served others to God’s glory.

After defining the identity of the recipients of this letter as “chosen exiles”, Peter begins to help these Christians be who they are. Moving from description to prescription, Peter gives four overarching commands in this section meant to help believers live according to their calling: 1) set your hope on Jesus’ grace 2) be holy 3) love one another 4) crave pure spiritual milk.

One of Jesus’ closest friends during his earthly ministry was a man He called Peter. Decades after his time spent alongside the Lord, Peter penned a letter to a group of “exiles” who are far from the geographical foundation of the Church. These exiles were not only far from home, so to speak, but experiencing immense suffering. Yet, Peter reminds them of the living hope they have in Jesus Christ.
