Wrapping up our last discussion about slavery, we expanded on the idea that what captivates our thoughts, time, energy, and money can easily enslave us. There is no escaping that we are made to worship, and we all worship something or someone. We get to choose the object of our worship. Put another way, we choose (and are 100% responsible for) who or what we surrender ourselves to. That object of our worship can draw us closer to who we want to become or what we aim to do, or it can drive us away from it. We know this is true, as we experience the consequences of our choices all the time. Change is hard. To change anything we do, or to change how we view something (or someone), is an exercise of mental fitness. So, how do we change our minds?That's the subject of today's conversation as we dig into David Bayer's book A Changed Mind. What we find is that we always get to choose how we color the blank page of every person and circumstance in our life. We naturally look for evidence to support the way we first colored each page, which makes it harder to see it differently. Thus the challenge of changing our mind. Factoring in the emotions we attach to each person and experience, we see another obstacle to changing our minds. But, while our emotions are real and powerful, they should not be in the driver's seat. Rather, we must filter everything through the lens of truth; the unchangeable, reliable reality. There is usually a fear associated with changing our mind about a person, experience, or circumstance that needs to be addressed if we are to change. Pursue truth, and fear fades. It’s surprising how easily we let our need for approval — and our fear of rejection — shape who we become, often without even realizing it.One way to overcome this way of thinking is to consider the difference between being nice and being good. Speaking from personal experience, most of the time the problem I face is not actually the problem. How can that be? The problem in my face is often a symptom of the real problem. I bet you can relate.But since we live a frantic life of running a hamster wheel, we don't pause long enough to process the root of the problem. Instead, we exhaust ourselves trying to address symptom after symptom with minimal and temporary relief because we have not addressed the root cause of the problem. Does life feel hard? Like many things are "conspiring" against you, making life difficult? You struggle to achieve your goals, or to slay the bad habit. Do you get frustrated when the obstacles to your plans and goals pile up in front of you? Me too. Why does it seem like everything is so hard? We are trying to do good things. The truth is that we practice perseverance all the time without realizing it. There are always obstacles to our plans and routines, and we work through them. Perseverance is part of my job; solving problems and removing obstacles to get to the goal. So then, how can we exercise mental fitness to grow in perseverance so we aren't so frustrated and discouraged at the roadblocks, detours, and mountains of obstacles in our way?
