  • Ep 174: Why conspiracy theories thrive and how to cope with them
So much about how we've coped, or not, through lockdown is based on our perceptions, thoughts and emotions about the new world around us.

This week Mick Coyle has been exploring the role of myths, hoaxes and conspiracy theories in that setting. Where they come from, who they come from, and why some people are tempted to believe them.

First up, Professor Peter Kinderman offers his thoughts as Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Liverpool.

He discusses why hoaxes thrive, and why beliefs play a key role in how we see the world.

Then we hear from Dr Elena Musi from UoL, who is working on a new project that will help us make sense of new information by critically analysing it, rather than just believing the first piece of information we see.

She tells Mick about a new AI Chatbot she's building that aims to help people see a bigger picture beyond a headline or hoax.

  • Ep 173 Perfect Pain with Parham Parastaran
Parham Parastaran was the epitome of the American Dream. After fleeing Iran as a child, he had built the “perfect” life for himself: a multimillion-dollar business, his dream home, a loving wife, and three beautiful children – all while nursing a secret. Normal days at the office or home are punctuated by seven-hour showers, faked business trips, and the constant fear of discovery.

Until one morning when he wakes up to his wife’s horrified face - and realises he is passed out face up on his bar, stark naked, surrounded by glass and traces of fine white powder.

Parham is Mick's guest on this week's Podcast, sharing the secrets behind his journey, and how using the idea of "perfect pain", finds happiness in his everyday life beyond the trappings of money.

The book is available via his website www.perfectpain.com
