Paul suffered joyfully to form a new family in Christ. Like Paul, we have the same Jesus living in us; the same strength, the same hope, and the same work.
In the midst of trials and difficulties, we can rejoice and have hope because of God's present -- and future --mercy to us through Jesus Christ.
The church must keep certain things in tension in order to be healthy and function as Christ designed it to. In this sermon we'll see that the church must devote herself to ministering with both grace and truth and maintaining the connection between Christ's cross and our own.
The church must keep certain things in tension in order to be healthy and function as Christ designed it to. In this sermon we'll see that the church must be devoted to both word and deed, and maintain a synergy between both clergy and laity.
In our text, and often in our lives, hard stuff is placed right alongside the good stuff. And we're left trying to make sense of it. Is God against us in one situation and for us in another? There's a dissonance we hear and feel. But when once we see how the two come together in the Christian life, we find, not only can we discern the music and the harmony of it all, we can actually learn to dance to it!
One of the most important things in life is to not just know who we are - but whose we are and how we came to be. Knowing this as Christians will ground us through the storms of life & faith.
A great many of our problems can be traced to the fact that we don't really believe nor see that the Son of Man is truly standing at the right hand of God right now . . . for us! His redemption is full and complete and finished. But his intercession before the Father on our behalf is ongoing-indeed, he lives for such a task (cf. Heb. 7:25)!
As we said last week, one way we can know we've truly been walking with Jesus is we'll start to look more and more like him. We'll look like the one we've been looking at. Stephen here looks like Jesus, not just in the way he serves and suffers, but also in the way he speaks. His words are wise, courageous, and gracious. As we look to Jesus, ours will be too!
One way we can know we've truly been walking with Jesus is we'll start to look more and more like him. We'll look like the one we've been looking at. We'll become like the one we've been beholding. As we spend time with Jesus, we're renewed into the image of Jesus.
While acknowledging the wrongs done in the name of Christianity throughout history, we cannot deny the ways our world - even today - has been positively shaped by the Christian faith.
