Praying is something easy to talk about but hard to do. Paul knows that. And that's why here in our text he offers help. He shows us how to pray with both grit and gratitude!
On Christmas Day, we are humbled and in awe of the incarnation of Jesus - because in His incarnation we see the mystery and majesty of God's love for us through Jesus' humility, humanity and divinity.
Our culture makes a big deal of love, but we have no idea what it really is. We define it in terms of affection, action, or allegiance, but our notions of it are always reductionistic and even distorted. The Bible, on the other hand, defines love ultimately as a person. And he's the one who's come down to us at Christmas. Jesus is the love of God made manifest!
The Christian's hope begins all the way back in the opening pages of Genesis. Christmas and the coming of Jesus isn't the beginning of our hope. In many ways it's the culmination and climax of it!
What is peace? And where do we find it? The biblical notion of peace (shalom) is so much more magnificent and comprehensive than we tend to think of it. And the amazing thing: it's given to us freely by grace through Christ!
The grace that we've been given in Jesus should make us the most grateful people on the planet and yet, if we're honest, often we're not. Why? What is it that gets in the way? And how can we get it right?
We all want to know God's will for our lives. Well, here in 1 Thess. 5:18 he tells us: give thanks in all circumstances. God wants us Christians to be famous for our glad-hearted gratitude. But where does this sort of thing come from? How do we get it? How do we do it?
The Gospel recognizes, redeems and reconciles our (cultural) differences as a church community.
Habakkuk is a book about joy. God wants you and I to have an incorruptible, untouchable, everlasting joy regardless of whatever earthly circumstances we may be facing. And here, in these closing verses, he is showing us how to get it!
You're struggling with something. Right now. We all are. Life is hard. But, even still, hear this: God is fighting for you! And because he is fighting for you, even in the roughest of circumstances, you can find deep rest in him.
