How do we move from grumbling to singing? What steps can we take? Habakkuk shows us the way. We start with quieting ourselves before God; then we open our Bibles and read; we fight for faith in the things revealed; and in this we start to find our song!
When we put our trust in idols, we become like them: silent and dead. But when we turn from such things and trust in Jesus, we come alive!
As we acknowledge Jesus as Lord, we respond by loving Him, treasuring His Word, and sharing His Word with the next generation.
When we aren't secure in Jesus, we end up trying to prove our worth by measuring ourselves against others. We compare and compete. We try to get glory for ourselves by shaming them. But such things are never sufficient. Only Jesus offers us a way out of this trap and into freedom!
We're all tempted to try to make a name for ourselves apart from God, but such efforts are doomed to fail. Only Christ can give us an identity that is stable and secure and able to stand the test of time.
In our attempts to keep ourselves safe from the reach of harm, ironically, we often put ourselves right in harm's way. When we leave God and his word to pursue security on our own, we leave the only one place true and lasting security is found!
Jesus warns us that sometimes we may think we are close to God when in reality we might be closed to God.
We're all tempted to set our hope and heart upon money and the things of this world. But it's a trap. It promises joy while it jeopardizes it. Jesus, on the other hand, made himself poor, so that in him we might become rich in all that truly matters, and all that truly lasts!
Because of Jesus and the cross, God's coming judgment is good news for his people. We can look forward to it as the day of our salvation and the day God will make all the wrong right.
In the book of Jonah, God's mercy and mission ultimately lead us to Jesus, who is the ultimate demonstration of God's mercy and mission to us and the world.
