Picking up where we left off in the Gospel of John chapter 15, Rabbi Steve Berkson picks up in verse 16 where he explains how Yeshua has chosen us to be a part of His work here on the earth. Even though at that time He was talking directly to His disciples, giving them instruction before He was about to be killed, His words can apply to us today if we will allow ourselves to be discipled through His Holy Spirit and produce the fruit He expects to see.

All of what Rabbi Berkson has unpacked from John 15 is about love for one another in the way the Father expects us to love. We are called and chosen so that we are no longer a part of the world and its ways. As we pull away from the world to follow Messiah and live according to Torah we will experience a disdain from others who do not understand Messiah or why we choose to follow Him.

Continuing in the book of 1 John, Rabbi Steve Berkson begins this teaching in chapter 5 where John tells us that belief in Messiah Yeshua and all that carries with it does not come from us, but that belief or knowledge and relationship has been birthed in us from above.

In verses 2 and 3 Rabbi Berkson points out that, again, love is connected to Torah Observance and that the commandments of Yahweh are not heavy or burdensome.

In verse 4 John calls us who believe, overcomers. Having been born of Elohim and given the ability to have a relationship with Messiah Yeshua we overcome the world through that belief. Rabbi Berkson clarifies what overcoming the world looks like – we see things and respond to challenges in our lives differently than the way the world does.

Moving on, Rabbi Berkson takes us to the Gospel of John, same writer, different book, to link what we learned from 1 John with what is being conveyed in the gospel writing. Yeshua speaks metaphorically of the relationship we have with Him and the Father by using vines and branches and a gardener who takes care of the whole thing.

In the review of the last episode, Rabbi Berkson cautions about deceptive teachers as John also cautioned in 1 John 4:1. This deception is at work today in some faiths in that they are actually a “World System mixed with Truth”. As Rabbi Berkson points out, some people have a tough time hearing the message from the Word of Elohim because it’s not delivered in a way that matches their predetermined ideas of how it should be dispensed. The teachers in this system are also guarded in what they say and how they say it because of being more concerned with offending people than with pleasing Elohim.

In 1 John 4:7 Rabbi Berkson begins this teaching by explaining how we are to love each other who are of the same mind in Messiah. He explains the if we can’t love each other, how can we extend any love outside of ourselves and to those whom Elohim would want to have in covenant with Him.

In verse 9 the word ‘manifest’ is used and Rabbi Berkson wants to make sure the definition of that word does not get lost in any previous understanding we may have. The word ‘manifest’ means to be revealed to the seeing eye. Messiah is manifested through us as we live through Him, not the other way around, loving others as He would love them.

Returning to the letter of 1 John, Rabbi Steve Berkson begins this teaching in chapter 3. He proclaims how wonderful it is that Yahweh is pleased to call us His children. Rabbi Steve goes on to say that because the world does not understand Yahweh, they will not understand us either. But we understand Yahweh because He has chosen to reveal Himself to us by opening our eyes and our ears. The day is coming when Messiah appears we will understand completely because as John puts it, we shall be like Him.

From the first nine verses of the book of John, chapter 14, Rabbi Steve Berkson shows us how Messiah Yeshua was the “ultimate expression of discipleship” under His Father. So we should, as followers of Messiah, be as such so that others will see Yeshua represented in us and ultimately see the Father.

What did Yeshua do? He walked out the Torah-observant life perfectly. He invites us to do what He did, and He provides help in sending His Spirit.

What’s in a name? Yeshua says, “if you ask whatever in My Name…” Does this mean if His Name is invoked, like a magic genie He has to do one’s bidding? Rabbi Steve clarifies what Messiah meant when He told us to use His Name.
