Career transition and midlife reinvention
Career transition and midlife reinvention rarely arrive as one dramatic exit, and my guest this week, Dave Albrechta, is proof of that. Dave is a recovering employment litigator who spent a decade representing employees in federal court before walking away from the adversarial legal system to ask a beautiful, slightly mad question. What if lawyers could become healers of human conflict instead of fighters of it?
Values alignment
We talk about the difference between chasing an identity and living a purpose, and Dave's own simple, powerful line for anyone sitting in a conflict right now: "Does this align with your values?" Does this align with who you actually are? He realised his working life was quietly at war with what he believed in, and that gap is where this whole conversation genuinely lives.
The messy middle moment
About ten years into practice, as a brand new parent to twin babies in the middle of the pandemic, everything Dave had built started to feel a little grey rather than sharp and certain. There was no single dramatic day, just a slow, quiet shift, and that is exactly the kind of messy middle moment this whole show exists to talk about honestly, without rushing to a tidy answer.
Nervous system regulation for midlife burnout
Dave is honest in this conversation about how he managed the strain at the time: acupuncture, breathwork, Qigong, sound healing, and, by his own admission, probably more drinking than he should have, all while presenting to clients, lawyers, and judges as completely even-keeled. It is an honest picture of nervous system regulation for midlife burnout when it is managed rather than properly heard.
Nine principles of authentic living
That night he looked up the phrase "lawyers as healers" and found a quote from a former Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Warren Burger, saying exactly that, decades earlier. Dave now hosts his own podcast, Lawyers as Healers, and works as a mediator and coach, living proof of Understanding, one of my nine principles of authentic living, in action every day.
Dave Albrechta spent a decade as an employment litigator in the American federal courts, representing employees inside one of the most adversarial systems there is. Wanting to be a lawyer since he was four or five years old, with a lawyer father and a judge grandfather, the identity was practically inherited before he had a say in it.
About ten years into practice, as a new parent to twin babies during the pandemic, the strain surfaced in ways he could no longer manage with acupuncture, breathwork and Qigong alone. A confusing moment in his office one Monday, and a quote he found that same night from former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger, that the obligation of the legal profession is to serve as healers of human conflict, sent him toward mediation and coaching. He now hosts his own podcast, Lawyers as Healers, and works with people navigating conflict without losing themselves in the process.
