  • Metta Meditation

Hello, and welcome to Methods, an exploration in guided prayer and meditation.

This is our fourth season, Feel. In this season, we’ll attempt to showcase methods of prayer and meditation that facilitate feeling, embodiment, and direct perception of reality, beneath the web of our conditioned thought patterns.

Metta is the pali word for loving kindness, and its one of the four Brahmaviharas, or sublime states, and one of the ten piramis, or perfections in Theravada buddhism. This method is slightly different than a previous meditation, where we took on the suffering of other beings. In this one we will project happiness to them.

  • Tonglen Meditation
Hello, and welcome to Methods, an exploration in guided prayer and meditation.
This is our fourth season, Feel. In this season, we’ll attempt to showcase methods of prayer and meditation that facilitate feeling, embodiment, and direct perception of reality, beneath the web of our conditioned thought patterns.
Today’s exercise: Buddhist Tonglen goes a step beyond merely accepting the inevitability of unpleasantness.  In some sense we master it, as we seek it out in others.

  • Embodied Sound

In this Method, I explore the connection between our mindful perception of sound, and our attachment to our conceptual framework that lays over our attachments and aversions. What if we were able to simply be still and receive our external environment on its own terms? Use this short meditation to free yourself from the tension you may feel in noisy environments.

  • Apophatic Meditation: Beyond Concepts
The apophatic tradition is rooted in the idea that there are ways that God is simply not knowable. We may know the "energeia" of God, but not God's essence, at least not with our conceptual mind. All the qualities that the Divine display go beyond the words we use and the thoughts we can think. Use this simple meditation to let go of your conceptual framework for Source.

  • Thirst/Tanha
This is a short musing about the concept of thirst and attachment as it relates to religious traditions and spirituality.
    Let go or get dragged.
A pretty harsh statement to say the least. But it is our craving, our thirst, our attachments or tanhā that lead to suffering. But there is an end to suffering. And one aspect of the means to that end is to let go. This can be likened in the Christian tradition to the kenosis of Christ; the emptying of oneself. When we do this, we slip below our superficial personality to be conformed into the image of the Son, or to recognize our Buddha nature. So it is really up to us.
Will we cling to our suffering?
Or will we let it go?
