Tara Askham is an award-winning finance educator, published author and mentor, and founder of TKA Finance Training. She helps small business owners and non-finance leaders understand their numbers with confidence, not jargon. She is a member of Xero’s Financial Confidence Taskforce, a Steering Committee member for the UK Government-backed Maple Review, a consultant to global awarding bodies including AAT, and a funding panel member for NatWest S&CC Charity. Her mission is to bridge the gap between accountants and business owners through practical, confidence-building financial education.

We chat all about the numbers, understanding your numbers, and why.

Tara shares her back story which started with a Blue Peter Appeal, training to be an accountant, and how she turned up for a college course then found herself teaching it the following week.

Numbers are her passion, not just the numbers but helping business owners really understand them.

In this episode of Mic Drop Moments, Sandra Garlick MBE is joined by Shelley Wilson, multi-genre author and writing mentor, to talk about turning a major setback into a powerful reset.

While on holiday in Boston, Shelley opened an email from her publisher with the subject line “We’re closing.” Within weeks, 13 of her books were set to disappear from Amazon, Waterstones, and everywhere else.

After the initial spiral (and a much-needed reality check from her daughter), Shelley made a bold choice: reclaim control.

She explains what happens when you publish traditionally, why authors don’t always own their rights, and how a reversion of rights letter gave her the chance to rebuild, starting from scratch with Word documents, new covers, formatting, and ISBNs. She also made the tough decision not to republish everything, instead focusing on the books that fit her now, especially romance and rom-com.

The turning point? Shelley stepped into her “Taylor Swift era” and launched her own publishing imprint, learning the tech and creating long-term freedom.

She’s now able to support writers from idea to published book, and she’s celebrating her next chapter with Book 22, a Yorkshire motorhome rom-com, plus her quirky short-form podcast 'The Campervan Writer Show' recorded from her campervan, Snoopy. 

Shelley leaves listeners with her go-to quote and the perfect message for anyone facing an unexpected setback:

In this episode of Mic Drop Moments, Sandra Garlick MBE is joined by Eve Stanway, psychotherapist, breakup/divorce coach, and difficult conversations expert, to explore why so many of us avoid the conversations we most need to have, and how one brave moment can change everything.

Eve shares the personal turning point that sparked her work: the difficult conversation in which her ex-husband asked for a divorce. While painful in the moment, Eve explains how it became transformational, opening her eyes to the conversations she had been avoiding and inspiring her to write her first book, Conversations at the Shoreline.

Together, Sandra and Eve unpack what “difficult conversations” really look like in everyday life, from asking for more help at home, setting boundaries around time and energy, and addressing concerns with friends, to navigating workplace conflict, client boundaries, and partnership tensions. Eve explains that the challenge is often not the topic itself, but the fear of the other person’s reaction, something many of us learned early in life.

A standout moment is Eve’s reframe of “keeping the peace.” Avoidance may look like peace, but it can actually create isolation, whereas real peace comes from honest communication and resolution.

Eve also shares how her next book (due May 2026) expands difficult conversations into the world of parenting young adults, helping parents and young people communicate better during a stage where relationships often shift, strain, or even break down. She challenges the assumption that social media is the main issue, suggesting instead that adults need to become safer, more open conversational spaces.

To help listeners take action, Eve introduces her practical framework, The Magic Three: Clarify, Communicate, Correct:

Clarify what you need (using “I” statements).

Communicate it calmly and directly.

Correct by repeating the message (steadily, as many times as needed) when the conversation goes off track.
