In the studio today, we welcomed the wonderful Riman Dlay. As a Brentwood mum and talented writer, Riman truly understands the magic of a well-told story.
Furthermore, Riman visited us on Eat My Brunch to share the inspiration behind her debut children’s book, Same Journey, Different Shoes.
The Story Behind the Story
Because her Punjabi grandparents inspired her, Riman’s book pays tribute to her family’s oral storytelling traditions. Although her grandparents arrived in the UK unable to read or write, their stories kept their history alive.
Consequently, these stories gave Riman a sense of identity and courage. Even as a quiet child, she used these tales to find where she belonged.
Why Representation Matters
Additionally, Riman spoke passionately about why children need to see themselves reflected in books. This is especially vital for children who feel “different,” quiet, or overlooked.
Therefore, Same Journey, Different Shoes aims to give every child that essential sense of belonging.
How You Can Support the Journey
Riman has now launched a crowdfund to bring this book to life. Because of this, the Brentwood community has a special way to get involved.
If you contribute through Crowdbound, Riman will feature your name in the book’s official acknowledgements. This offers a beautiful way to become a permanent part of this story’s legacy.
