Overview: Why Lamentations-----The book of Lamentations is a written memorial to the most grievous suffering of the OT. We build memorials to fallen soldiers - -lest we forget.- Why do we do this- Because the generation that endures such suffering wants to communicate to all following generations- -Never again------But of course, such a desire is a forlorn hope. Sure, we say, -Never again- - but then there arises a generation that has no understanding of such suffering. And they fall into all the patterns and practices of the past - and before you know it - we-re here again.----The book of Lamentations serves as a memorial for the destruction of the temple in 587 BC. It stands as a monument - -lest we forget.-----The poetry of Lamentations -gives voice to those who were rendered voiceless in the vortex of violence.- -What can I say for you- -verse 13-. The whole book of Lamentations is the answer. -What can I say- I can pour out my heart and soul and give voice to your grief.----Have you ever felt like you can-t really be honest about your suffering- Maybe you feel like people will think that you are -blaming God.- Lamentations does that.-----Lamentations consists of a -battle-scarred theology in the midst of appalling suffering, yet doing so in poetry of remarkable verbal power, dramatic dialogue and structural skill- -Wright, 28-.----There are two main voices in these poems - there is the shocked and horrified poet, and there is Lady Zion the desolate and ashamed and bereaved.-----One voice is conspicuously absent. God never speaks in Lamentations.----Heaven is silent.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 68-----Think about what is happening here at the end of the book of Exodus. The glory of the LORD fills the tabernacle. ----Where had the glory of the LORD been-----At the top of Mt. Sinai.----In chapter 20-31, Moses had gone up the mountain to meet with God. In chapters 32-34 the LORD had revealed his glory -at least his back- to Moses, resulting in Moses- face shining every time he went in to speak with God.----But God does not want to live on a mountain. He wants to live with his people. So he has Israel construct this portable tent - complete with a portable grill -the altar- - so that he might wander in the wilderness with his people. As many have pointed out, the tabernacle is like a mountain tipped over on its side - as you go in the tabernacle, it is like you are ascending Mt. Sinai, getting closer and closer to the glory of the LORD at the top.----Think back to how the 70 elders were allowed to go part way up the mountain in Ex 24 because of the burnt offerings and peace offerings. In the same way, the priests are allowed to go part way into the holy place - but only the High Priest is allowed into the Holy of Holies-

Overview: Lamentations teaches us how to mourn - how to weep - how to lament. In the Hebrew Bible, Lamentations is found in between Ecclesiastes and Esther. The order is Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel - books that reflect on the trials of life in exile.----But the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures placed it right after Jeremiah - and there are lots of allusions to Jeremiah-s prophecies, so it is fitting to consider it in that context as well.----But I think that it is better to think of Lamentations in terms of wisdom literature than as a -prophet.- We are not dealing especially with sermons as much as with songs.----There is a tension in Lamentations -as in so much of OT poetry- between the acknowledgment of God-s faithfulness and the reality of suffering - indeed, the realization that God has brought this suffering.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 84------And he made...-----The verb translated -he made- is one of the most common verbs in the Bible. -Asah- means -he made- or -he did- or -he worked.------It has a very wide usage - and is found in all the central actions of the book of Exodus. For instance, in Exodus 1 the midwives -did not do- as Pharaoh commanded them. That-s asah - they did not do - they did not do the work that Pharaoh commanded. And so the LORD made for them houses - he did for them -asah- he worked on their behalf.----All through the plagues, there are lots of uses of asah -coming to its climax in the LORD-s declaration that he will do judgment on Egypt in the death of the firstborn -Ex 12-12-.----When you talk about -keeping- the Passover - the verb is asah - to -do- or to -make- the Passover.----And then from chapter 25 through chapter 39, it goes crazy- There are over a hundred uses of asah in the description of the tabernacle - -generally -you shall make-- in chapters 25-31. And of course, in chapters 32-34 - the rebellion at Sinai with the golden calf - the whole focus is on how they made -asah- the golden calf.----And having decided to show mercy to his people, the LORD gives his Spirit to Bezalel the craftsman, so that he might make -asah- the tabernacle - a sanctuary for God-s name. Our passage today has over 70 uses of the verb.----So let-s put it all together---The LORD made the heavens and the earth.--The LORD did mighty deeds in saving his people from Egypt.------Now his people are called to do as the LORD commands, and make a holy dwelling place where the LORD might dwell in their midst.----That-s pretty much the story of the book of Exodus - all told with one verb-

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 86-----So what does God mean in Exodus 34 when he says, -I am making a covenant-- Let's be clear- in one sense there is only one Mosaic Covenant. In all the rest of the scriptures, there is only one Mosaic Covenant.----Just like there is only one Abrahamic Covenant - even though God made a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15, and then many years later, in Genesis 17, God makes a covenant with Abraham- And then God says that he will establish his covenant with Isaac. Are these all separate covenants-----No, all of God-s dealings with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are all gathered together in the rest of scripture under the rubric of God-s covenant -singular- with Abraham.----In the same way, there are at least three distinct covenant-makings with Israel in the days of Moses---- Exodus 19-24 is the original covenant-making.--- Here in Exodus 32-34 the covenant is further developed.--- And then in Deuteronomy 29-30, the covenant is further developed and applied to the next generation.----And the reason for this second covenant-making is because the original covenant was broken...

Remember that the whole point of the Exodus is that God wants to dwell with humanity. The problem is that humanity keeps rebelling - --and God is holy.----Some might say, But if God is so loving and kind, why doesn-t he just forgive all this-- Well, Moses raised that question in 32-32 - -but now, if you will forgive their sin...- God, why don-t you just let this one go...----But what happens when you just -let this slide-- If sin is never dealt with, then it keeps getting worse- -Parents, if your child develops a habit of lying - it will not simply -go away- - patterns and behaviors grow and develop....
