Overview: -Sung Psalm- 50-----God uses the sacraments to save us - but you can only receive that salvation by faith.----That-s important for thinking about what God is doing through the sacrificial system here in Exodus.----Because there were some in OT Israel who thought that the sacraments worked by themselves. Our Psalm of response -Psalm 50- was written to counteract that view.----God says in Psalm 50 that if you think that you can just go on living your life the way you want, and then bring a sacrifice to God to -make everything better,- then God will not accept your sacrifices.----God does not need your sacrifices. -If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats------Yes, Israel is supposed to bring offerings and sacrifices to the temple - but not because God needs them- What God desires is not the flesh of bulls or the blood of goats- What God desires is to dwell with his people.-----Where all this is going is where the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us. God is doing all this in order to make humanity a holy dwelling place. The church is the holy temple - the holy dwelling place for God - so that God can dwell with his people forever.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 80-----God says that he will blot out the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, etc. And he commands Israel- -You shall utterly overthrow them- I will drive them out before you.- In the modern world this would be called -ethnic cleansing- or -genocide.-----How can God command this-----One of the benefits of preaching through the whole Bible is that it forces us to deal frankly with the hard teachings of Scripture. We can-t just pretend that these things don-t exist.----So how can a just and merciful God command the extermination of an entire people group-----Think about the principle that we see in the Flood and at Sodom and Gomorrah- the iniquity of a people is -complete- when God says -time-s up-- Noah was a righteous man - but no one listened to him. Lot sought to dissuade the men of Sodom - but no one listened to him.----When a people refuse to repent and believe in the LORD - when they refuse to listen to his prophets - that is a good sign that their iniquity may be complete.----So it-s not that the Amorites and the Canaanites were the worst sinners on earth. It-s rather that -time-s up- for them. The Final Judgment is coming upon the Amorites and the Canaanites - just as it had come for Sodom in the days of Lot, just as it had come for all humanity in the days of Noah.----And in each step, the son of God takes a more direct role. With Noah, God simply told him what he would do. With Abraham, God asked for his counsel. Now with Israel, the son of God will take the sword - even as God himself declares that he will be the one that drives the nations out before Israel.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 122-----The early verses of today's reading describe the various contributions that were to be made for the building of the tabernacle. Over the next few weeks we will hear the uses for all these things.-----Of course, the Israelites had been slaves. Where would slaves have obtained all these things- Remember back to the Exodus- before they left Egypt, God had told them to ask the Egyptians for gold, silver, and clothing. The Egyptians were so eager to let them go that they willingly gave their former slaves all sorts of goods in order to get rid of them-----Now the LORD calls Israel to take up a contribution. And notice the way it is to be done- -From every man whose heart moves him-- There is no specified percentage.------It is interesting to note that this same pattern is later used for the construction of the temple. And this principle is the one that Paul appeals to when he talks in 2 Corinthians 8-9 about the -cheerful giver.- -Each one must give as he has decided in his heart------Yes, there are other principles and patterns in the scripture that are useful as well, but it is important to note that Paul highlights this one in his discussion of giving.----Why-----Because Paul thinks of the church as a holy temple. The contributions for the building of the tabernacle in Exodus are a picture of how we are to give of ourselves to extend the kingdom of Jesus -as Paul says of the Macedonians - -they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.- 8-5-.----After all, we are the holy dwelling place of God by his Spirit.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 27-----Scholars of the ancient near east often point out the parallels between Israel-s worship and the cultures that surrounded them.----It is at least interesting to note that the layout of the Tabernacle has a lot of parallels to Ramesses- throne tent, which is depicted on the monuments where Ramesses Victory Song was also inscribed.----Just a few weeks before, Pharaoh-s army had been pursuing them. They may well have seen Pharaoh-s throne tent -from a distance- at the Red Sea. As slaves they may even have been involved in making the throne tent - -or at least building the monuments where the depictions were carved.----So when God tells Moses to make a -throne tent- for Yahweh - with the same layout - twice as long as it is wide- an entrance in the east- in the middle of the courtyard is a tent with two compartments - you can see why a skeptic might say that this is just an imitation of Pharaoh-s throne tent-----What is God doing here- Remember the constant refrain- -do everything shown you on the mountain-- On the mountain, Moses sees the heavenly pattern. And God tells him how to build the tabernacle as an imitation of that heavenly pattern.----We shouldn-t be surprised when unbelievers get things right. As Paul says, -For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law- -Romans 2-14-----Human beings cannot help but live in God-s world. Therefore, all peoples everywhere will get some things right. -The problem is that we all get things wrong as well - which means that we all need the gospel - which is kind of Paul-s whole point in Romans 1-3--
